A Stranger in the House by Shari Lapena Book Summary

A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

Another thrilling domestic suspense novel from the New York Times bestselling author of The Couple Next Door and Not a Happy Family

“A Stranger in the House will have you sleeping with the lights on for weeks.” —Bustle

“Smart and suspenseful. . . you'll never see the ending coming.” —PureWow

In this neighborhood, danger lies close to home.

Karen and Tom Krupp are happy—they’ve got a lovely home in upstate New York, they’re practically newlyweds, and they have no kids to interrupt their comfortable life together. But one day, Tom returns home to find Karen has vanished—her car’s gone and it seems she left in a rush. She even left her purse—complete with phone and ID—behind.

There's a knock on the door—the police are there to take Tom to the hospital where his wife has been admitted. She had a car accident, and lost control as she sped through the worst part of town.

The accident has left Karen with a concussion and a few scrapes.  Still, she’s mostly okay—except that she can’t remember what she was doing or where she was when she crashed. The cops think her memory loss is highly convenient, and they suspect she was up to no good.

Karen returns home with Tom, determined to heal and move on with her life. Then she realizes something’s been moved. Something’s not quite right. Someone’s been in her house. And the police won't stop asking questions.

Because in this house, everyone’s a stranger. Everyone has something they’d rather keep hidden. Something they might even kill to keep quiet.

Emotional rollercoaster. Definitely had many ups and downs with major twists, great story.

Amazing. This book was the best thing I've read in a long time. You think you have it all figured out and then it twists again. Definitely with the read!

Great. Great reading

Love this Author. Quick, captivating reads with mystery and twists.

AMAZING!!!!. Amazing ending, super shocking and mouth dropping. You wont be able to put this book down.

A Stranger in the House. suspenseful, with a shocking albeit delightful twist.

Nice mystery!. Nice and taut little mystery. Couldn’t put it down.

A good book. I enjoy books that are not to complex with to many characters. This book was just that. Simply written quick enjoyable read.

A Stranger in the House. I enjoy a good murder mystery! This was a quick easy read but predictable about half way through the book. The Couple Next Door was a much better book!

Review. Interesting until the end.

Wow. I didn’t see the ending it had coming. It caught me off guard. I loved it! Wow is all i can say

Suspenseful. This had me guessing what was going on. It was a good read and I finished it in about a week.

Meh....good enough but not great. Loved the idea of the story but the writing was short, the characters were lacking in details and she could have elaborated on so much more. It was as if she had the ideas for the characters and story but never fully developed them. Sometimes predictable and even cliche. Still, interesting enough to read over a weekend.

What the hell. Waste of money. Book ends rather suddenly

Not the worst. Not the worst, but definitely far from suspenseful. I would not consider this a nail bitter or a thriller by any means. The ending did have a twist which was nice, but the entire book was very obvious.

Fantastic!. I could not put the book down! Read in 3 days, and I’m a lazy reader! Shari knows how’s to keep you in her books, I can’t wait for the next novel! Maybe a second part of this book? Would be interesting.... also I loved the idea of her bringing Rasbach back!

Didn’t expect that. I actually had to skip and skim read parts of the story— and honestly put the book down more than a couple times.. just to get to the end of the story.. But I did enjoy the parts I read- just skimmed through parts to get there.

A stranger in the house. Awful, just awful. The plot is very elementary. A total waste of time.

So many twists!. Wow. Love Shari’s works!! You never know what to expect.

Predictable. Easy read, but very predictable.

A Stranger in the House. A real page turner. Couldn't put it down. A GREAT READ!

awful. too many plot twists, all over the place, no structure

Good Book. Good Book

Suspense. This book really had me going until the end. The ending was the reason I gave 4 stars.

Can’t put it down!. This book is good!!! Again could be a movie! It got suspense, and some drama. This is a good thriller mystery. I’m wondering will it be part 2?

Okay read. The story was a little slow and details were dragged on but the ending was surprising!

Good book!. Very good read in 3 days

Stranger in the House. Enthralling! I couldn’t read it fast enough. Excellent descriptions. The writing made me feel what the characters were feeling, seeing and living. Unexpected ending is the best.

Intriguing. Thoughtfully written. Kept me on thin line between thinking I knew what would happen to having me constantly guessing if I was right. Suggest giving it a sample read at least... had me hooked.

Just Fair. Not the best book I’ve read this year. I’m not a big fan of the present tense storytelling. The plot is a little thin and the ending left me cold.

A good read. Not one of her best books, but it keep me engaged. I did not care for the abrupt end although it was an interesting surprise

Just like a Lifetime Movie. Good quick read. Kept my attention. Storyline was meh and some areas unbelievable but twists and turns that kept it interesting.

👍🏾👍🏾. Hmm...this one was definitely interesting. I didn’t know what to believe, and I couldn’t stop reading. The cliffhanger at the end was amazing!

Anticlimactic and boring. Read this book because of all the positive reviews. “Won’t be able to sleep tonight” was one of them and I thoroughly disagree. The book put me to sleep numerous times. The ending was decent but very obvious. Literally nothing happens for the first 2/3 of the book.

Suspenseful. I’m reading the book and I’m halfway through, the book is very suspenseful and it keeps me guessing about what’s going on throughout the book. I would definitely suggest buying it.

Just ok. This book keeps you interested and is entertaining. I felt the plot was a bit too predictable in parts except for one twist at the end.

Like a cheesy lifetime movie. This author is the definition of verbose. She paints her female characters in the tired negative stereotypes of crazy, damaged and helpless, and greedy gold digger. I read to the end to find out the plot twists; however, I do not care to read another story told through her boringly sheltered, suburbanite filter.

I liked it. Okay, sooo I like mystery books with a strong female lead and this is a short read that will keep ya wanting more. I would recommend to readers with similar interests, some foreshadowing but good read still.

Not predictable yet obvious. A quick and pleasurable read. Amazing story with details so carefully woven together. Some factoid reappears later on, making something seem so obvious only after you read. Couldn’t put it down!

She is a fantastic writer!. Super captivating. I truly wasn’t expecting the ending. I finished it in 3 days just like I did her other book, The Couple Next Door. She is a fantastic writer!!!

Ugh. What a waste of money. The “twists” are predictable and the writing skill is on par with that of a 10th grader.
