I Let You Go by Clare Mackintosh Book Summary

THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

One of The New York Times Book Review’s 10 Best Crime Novels of 2016!

The next blockbuster thriller for those who loved The Girl on the Train and Gone Girl...“a finely crafted novel with a killer twist.”(#1 New York Times bestselling author Paula Hawkins)

On a rainy afternoon, a mother's life is shattered as her son slips from her grip and runs into the street...

I Let You Go follows Jenna Gray as she moves to a ramshackle cottage on the remote Welsh coast, trying to escape the memory of the car accident that plays again and again in her mind and desperate to heal from the loss of her child and the rest of her painful past.

At the same time, the novel tracks the pair of Bristol police investigators trying to get to the bottom of this hit-and-run. As they chase down one hopeless lead after another, they find themselves as drawn to each other as they are to the frustrating, twist-filled case before them. Elizabeth Haynes, author of Into the Darkest Corner, says, “I read I Let You Go in two sittings; it made me cry (at least twice), made me gasp out loud (once), and above all made me wish I'd written it...a stellar achievement.”

Parts were good...... Well and badly written at same time. Good mystery and bodice ripper at same time. Hope this author tightens things up as there was tension and decent character development. Finally, covers were a bit far apart.

An Exciting Read. This book held my interest although I was able to determine where it was going by part 2. A good read for the beach or anywhere where you don't want something too serious. This is not to say the book doesn't deal with dark issues. A few pages were very hard to read. I would recommend it to anyone.

Great read. This was a great read. I couldn't put it down and the twist in the end literally made my jaw drop!!

Great book!. Wow! Suspense, plot twists, great dialogue, real characters... What more could you ask for?! An entertaining read.

COULD NOT PUT DOWN!!!!!. I haven't read such a superb book like this in years!! I usually get bored and stop reading or skip to the end. Didn't do that with this great book!! Fantastic writing and a very good storyline. Loved Part one but Part two got very gritty! But it was still a "on the edge of your seat" read! I had to skip over some parts but overall, this is a fantastic read! I am putting the author on my "favorite author" list.

Addicting introduction to Mackintosh. Emotional and at some points, difficult to read.. Because the writing is gripping and realistic. I found myself thinking about the characters as actual people. Very well written! I think I have a new favorite author.

Slow start, exciting twists. It took a while for this book to turn into the thrilling page turner I was anticipating, but don't give up! The twists and turns are coming and oh so worth it!

Clever & Extremely Well Written. A true mystery, with plot twists which are excellently handled, I was mesmerized by this story. The characters are well drawn and memorable. The setting, which is --largely-- a Welsh coastal town, is a terrific back-drop for this novel full of torment and fear, violence and abuse, regret and redemption. If you are bored at first, keep reading: this story is not what you think it is.

I Let You Go. This is an awesome psychological thriller I enjoyed reading very much!! Many surprising twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat! The antagonist is a very evil psychopath who enjoys torturing and controlling women. Be prepared for a shocking ending!

A good, although not always comfortable, read. Despite it's dramatic start, the first quarter of the story drags a bit and appears at risk of falling into some too familiar "risk" formulas (e.g., romantic/sexual tensions between working partners in stressful, adrenalin-laced professions; mid-life and mid-marriage crises; etc.). However, as the story's true mystery emerges & shifting perspectives coalesce, it becomes a compelling page-turner presented in, at times, a surprisingly rich descriptive narrative. The awful events and dynamics at the center of this story are more common in everyday life than "the serial killer (or inventive psychopath) playing violent & murderous cat & mouse games with the passionately committed/obsessed detective(s)" plots of many mysteries and police procedurals. The story is powerful, poignant & at times painful because of those more real-life scenarios (this isn't to say the story is completely free of improbable plot twists, only that the core precipitating plot/events are more real-world). A good, although not always comfortable read.

Kept me on my toes!. An unexpected twist kept me from putting the book down !

Great book. I loved this book....couldn't put it down.

I Let You Go. I wish this book could've gone on forever. What a great twist, and with excellent writing to top it off, I was hooked. Couldn't wait to get back to reading at the end of everyday! I hope this author writes a million more. Highly recommend.

What a page turner. This is the best book I have read in ages. Great plot twists that I didn’t see coming at all. The first half was a good read but I couldn’t put it down once I got mid way.

Disappointing. What started as a lot of promise and excitement quickly petered out as the latter half became predictable and clichéd. Part 1 of the book ended with a surprising twist that heightened the suspense and mystery, but the author lost control of the plot and reverted to tired old sequences that you can see coming from a mile away. I kept reading hoping there would some clever turn that would make it worthwhile, but alas that was not to be.

I Let You Go. I thoroughly enjoyed this book - my first by this author and immediately bought her second one! Kept me on guessing

3.5/5. This novel is slow to start but worth getting through Part 1 to the fast paced twist filled Part 2. A pretty good beach read.

Couldn’t put this book down!. I could not lay this book down after about half way through! The first part wasn’t super interesting but it definitely takes a turn and you won’t want to stop reading

Would not recommend. This book was a hot mess.
