The Lodger by Marie Belloc Lowndes Book Summary

An Apple Books Classic edition.

Originally published in 1911 as a short story, The Lodger was based on the unsolved murders attributed to Jack the Ripper. Belloc Lowndes’s story is set in 1880s London, where the elderly Mrs. and Mr. Bunting are struggling to keep their failing lodging house afloat. Just as all hope seems lost, a mysterious stranger named Mr. Sleuth appears and asks about renting a room. Even better, he offers to pay the first month in advance—in gold. Is he the answer to the Buntings’ prayers? Or is something sinister afoot? At first, Sleuth’s night walks and biblical mutterings seem strange yet harmless. But with a violent serial killer stalking London, the Buntings eventually grow suspicious.

The Lodger is a gothic novel of ever-building suspense and a page-turning exploration of fear, guilt, and moral responsibility. A bestseller in its day, the book was adapted for the screen by none other than Alfred Hitchcock. If you enjoy psychological thrillers, give this classic story a try.

Psychological Thriller. This book is less about action and more about how different people’s minds work. Still seems relevant even though it was written in 1911.

Thrilling. I like that the ending is open. More killings in the future.

19th Century London Noir. A genuinely gripping thriller, The Lodger works on your nerves through omission: we never see the horrible acts, or witness anything conclusive. When blood is finally introduced into the story it is nearly at the end. We see the events through the eyes of two ‘bystanders’, a brilliant device to channel their growing suspicion and then terror through us, the readers. The Lodger is also a wonderful document charting the lives of a certain class in 19th C London

An excellent psychological thriller. A wonderful study of fear and morality. All sit in a late Victorian Era The story has a historical context. Well worth a quick read

Tense psychological thriller. Murder may stalk the streets, but the tension in this story is all psychological. With a setting loosely-based on the Jack the Ripper murders, it is the struggle with paranoia and claustrophobia of characters that pulls the reader into the story. The reader will be left asking ‘what would I do?’ long after the last page has turned.
