Nasilna zgodba, polna ambicij, umorov in incesta, velja za klasično delo gotske literature. Roman, ki je bil ob prvem izidu leta 1796 prepovedan, pripoveduje zgodbo o menihu, ki tone v svetu propada.
Menih je najbolj znano delo Matthewa Lewisa. Besedilo tematizira napad na brutalnost in hinavščino, ki sta v katoliški cerkvi vladali v začetku 17. stoletja. Dogajanje se vrši v Španiji in večino časa v ozadju čutimo odmeve inkvizicije. Vidimo, kako meniha pogubi njegov lasten ponos in kako hitro zabrede v grozotne zločine, ko postane obseden najprej z menihom istega reda, za katerega se nazadnje izkaže, da je preoblečena ženska, nato pa še z mlado nedolžno žensko iz bližnje premožne družine. Naracija vključuje tudi nadnaravne elemente, ki pa niso tako pomembni kot človeške zgodbe, v katerih avtor poudari grozote, ki so jih cerkev in njeni vazali povzročali prebivalcem Španije (in drugih dežel).
