Serafina and the Twisted Staff by Robert Beatty Book Summary

Serafina's defeat of the Man in the Black Cloak has brought her out of the shadows and into the daylight realm of her home, Biltmore Estate. Every night she visits her mother in the forest, eager to learn the ways of the cat¬amount. But Serafina finds herself caught between her two worlds: she's too wild for Biltmore's beautifully dressed ladies and formal customs, and too human to fully join her kin.

Late one night, Serafina encounters a strange and terrifying figure in the forest, and is attacked by the vicious wolfhounds that seem to be under his control. Even worse, she's convinced that the stranger was not alone, that he has sent his accomplice into Biltmore in disguise.

Someone is wreaking havoc at the estate. A mysterious series of attacks test Serafina's role as Biltmore's protector, culminating in a tragedy that tears Serafina's best friend and only ally, Braeden Vanderbilt, from her side. Heartbroken, she flees.

Deep in the forest, Serafina comes face-to-face with the evil infecting Biltmore—and discovers its reach is far greater than she'd ever imagined. All the humans and creatures of the Blue Ridge Mountains are in terrible danger. For Serafina to defeat this new evil before it engulfs her beloved home, she must search deep inside herself and embrace the destiny that has always awaited her.

Serafina and the Twisted Staff. I read the Black Cloak last summer and loved it… I just read the Twisted Staff and now that I am done, I want more Serafina. If you’ve read the first book, you’ll love the second. It is full of mystery and suspense. after every chapter all you want to do is read more. The book is filled with Serafina deciding between two completely different worlds… I couldn’t stop reading, trying to figure out what she would do!

A great adventure!. I was on the advanced reading team for Robert Beatty's second Serafina novel and what an adventure! The story begins a few weeks after Serafina and the Black Cloak left off, and again something is not quite right at the Biltmore Estate. The action begins quickly, and the book was difficult to put down. Beatty did an excellent job developing the characters, both new and returning. As with the first Serafina, Beatty skillfully incorporates historical events and people into his narrative, which helps lend a realistic view on what life was like at Biltmore and the surrounding areas at the turn of the 20th century. Full of a wonderfully descriptive narrative, it is easy to envision the places Serafina experienced, from the bedrooms in the Biltmore house to the tall mountains of the Pisgah National Forest. A great read that both young adults and grown-ups will enjoy. I am anxiously awaiting to read about Serafina's next adventures!

An Excellent Add To Your Home Library. I requested to be a part of the advance reading team and received an advanced copy of Serafina and the Twisted Staff from the author. I enjoyed this story from the beginning. So much that I created an OOAK doll of Serafina in her gown as depicted in the engaging book trailer for Serafina and the Black Cloak. This second book has re-inspired my desire to create another Serafina as she blossoms into an engaging, interesting person with a new gown revealed in another quality created book trailer. The story picks up pretty much right where it left off. The author weaved an interesting series of events that invoked curiosity and sheer anticipation for more information. The fantasy element was clever and I was inclined to accept the mysteries and delighted each time a morsel of clarity was offered for each element. As a homeschool parent I am likely to read my children's books before they do. It was a pleasure to hand the book to my 13, 12, and 10 year old boys and get their enthusiastic reviews upon a speedy completion. It even spurred them to re-read the first book and quickly take mental note when the third (and final?) installment would be released. Talking points with them were some of the historical references (we have visited Biltmore several times), the intriguing magical culture, and the exciting personalities of Serafina and Braedon. I would recommend this book to fellow parents with a mild warning of suspense within the storyline and even so is well timed to excite but not frighten. Add this selection to the family library and plug in to the author's online presence and the fantastic book tour on the calendar. And for goodness sake, make a trip to the Biltmore Estate a priority and experience Serafina's adventure to its fullest!

Robert Beatty does it again!. I found this series last November, my family and I were planning a trip to Biltmore and Serafina and the Black Cloak came up in a search I did looking for books about Biltmore. I read the book straight through in one evening because I could not put it down! The writing/storytelling style took me back to my childhood, when my dad would tell me bedtime stories. Not only was the story thoroughly enjoyable I loved the insight that it gave into the house, reading the book and then touring the house made the story come alive even more. I applied for the SART (Serafina Advanced Reading Team) and was blessed with an advanced copy of the sequel. It's sequel, Serafina and the Twisted Staff took me on a magical journey back to Asheville, NC with characters that I love and a surprise twist that I never saw coming. In Black Cloak, Serafina discovered the mystery of who she was but as you'll read in Twisted Staff, she wasn't quite finished coming into her own. This book combines self-discovery with the power of friendship and the important life lesson of facing your problems and not running away from them. In Twisted Staff Serafina makes new friends, and enemies; meets with disaster and triumphs in the end; finds her own power, and recognizes the power of her friends. Robert Beatty is an absolute master of his craft combining fantasy with reality and fact with fiction. There's never a dull moment, and I truly felt that I was right there in the story and not just a subtle observer.

Serafina. Awesome. Just awesome. Lots and lots of suspense and I could not put my iPad down, even at school!! I would recommend this book for people who like suspense, definitely nature, and a little bit of drama.

All Time Favorite. The first book, amazing. The second book outstanding. It is extremely interesting and you can really draw yourself to each character. If you are looking for a great, fun, and appropriate book, this is the one you want.

Robert Beatty hits the mark!. Robert Beatty has done it again! Serafina and the Twisted Staff will captivate you from the beginning. The story picks up where the first left off and offers suspense throughout the entire book. I enjoyed Serafina's character development even more in the second book installment, as she seeks to discover herself and save her friends. I highly recommend this book for 10+, as younger children may be a bit nervous. I can't wait for a third book.

Serafina and the Twisted Staff. The Twisted Staff picks up where the Black Cloak left off- Serafina is in the middle of an exciting series of adventures working to solve another dark mystery that threatens the Biltmore Estate. I think readers will enjoy the brisk plot, the story's dark twists, and its fantasy elements. Personally, it was the novel's themes of self-discovery, bravery, and friendship, that resonated most. I can see younger readers finding some aspect of Serafina's journey that rings true in their lives. Beatty does a fine job of weaving Biltmore Estate history into the story. His inclusion of Fredrick Law Olmsted was an inspired decision that added historical richness to the fantastical plot lines. Western North Carolina readers will enjoy scenes set in familiar places: along the banks of the French Broad River, up on the rocks of Craggy Gardens, and behind waterfalls hidden deep in Pisgah National Forest. Technology buffs will note Beatty's inclusion of the late 19th century innovations found at Biltmore House: refrigeration, the elevator, and its fire alarm. Overall, I think the book does a good job of pushing Serafina's story forward. Readers who enjoyed getting to know the title character in The Black Cloak will be highly entertained and satisfied with the second installment of the series.

Serafina and the Twisted Staff - a classic. I am privileged to have received an advanced reader copy of a captivating new book entitled Serafina and the Twisted Staff, which was written by author Robert Beatty. This fast paced mystery book is the second one in a series about a young girl whose existence has been kept a secret by her pa who lives in the basement of the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina. By creating his story as historical fiction, the author places the reader into the elegant 1899 lifestyle of the Vanderbilts who live at their elaborately decorated Biltmore mansion. He skillfully weaves local history into a suspenseful tale that shocks, as well as excites both the middle school students it is recommended for and all of the adults who can't get enough of this delightful story! The richness of the language used by Mr. Beatty is impressive and often borders on poetic. The author's vivid descriptions added to the excellent and respectful use of regional dialect allows readers to easily sense and visualize exactly what happens as Serafina and her friend Braeden Vanderbilt sneak around to investigate mysterious houseguests and search for clues about the dangerous things that have been taking place. This unlikely friendship grows as the two explore Biltmore and the surrounding forests and battle powerful evil threats as they solve the spooky, rather complex mystery. In the first book, Serafina and the Black Cloak, Serafina aches to understand why her pa had been hiding her for the first 12 years of her life. Throughout the second book, Serafina and the Twisted Staff, this young protagonist is pulled toward her destiny as she continues to grapple with loyalty decisions and finds even more surprising discoveries about her own origins. Though Serafina is exhausted from dealing with the Man in the Black Cloak in the first book, she is immediately drawn into a new and very serious threat that involves both the Biltmore Estate and the people and animals she is trying to protect there. The depth of the language, multiple understories, and wisdom woven into the complex plot make this an exciting read! As a 5th grade teacher in departmentalized English classrooms, I recently used both books as high interest mentor texts to help my students prepare for Virginia’s high stakes tests. The text of both books offered many possibilities for correlation to the Virginia standards and the local pacing guides for teachers. My students absolutely loved that I read the Serafina books orally as we reviewed story structure, characterization, figurative language, genre, point of view, and use of context clues! As the heroine of the series, Serafina is strong and courageous. She offers appealing characteristics and is a good role model of perseverance, friendship, and loyalty. Thank you, Mr. Beatty, for writing pure enjoyment for your readers! Linda Woodward Jonesville, Virginia

Must Read!. I was chosen to be a part of the Advanced Reading Team for Serafina and the Twisted Staff by Robert Beatty. I was so excited to be chosen to get a sneak peak at the second book in the series, and started reading it as soon as I got it in the mail. After reading the first book as a read aloud with my fourth grade class, I was hooked! I can tell you that I honestly did not think it could be better than the first, but it was as good, if not better than the first book, Serafina and the Black Cloak! It picks up where Serafina left off in the first book after dealing with the dark forces of the black cloak. It immediately draws you into the story anxious to find out what Serafina and her friend, Braden Vanderbilt, will have to overcome in this adventure. The more I read, the harder it was to put down the book. It definitely did not disappoint, and I will eagerly be awaiting the third book in the series!

Meh plz read. Good story but not too great for kids who are really good readers who only have fun with comic books and little kids books! SERIOUSLY SOMEONE FORGOT ABOUT COMEDY

College students LOVE. Not only is this a children's book, this college student LOVES the novel. It was awesome truly an amazing novel to read. I HIGHLY recommend everyone to read it. The book keeps you wanting to read more, I did not want the story to end!! Hopefully there will be a third book!!

Loved this book!. This book was a great read. If you enjoyed Harry Potter you will love this series. Noah from Michigan

Serafina and the Twisted Staff. Serafina and the Black Cloak was a refreshing addition to the genre of children's literature. The mysterious Serafina allows you to experience a multi-faceted character that immediately finds a special place in your heart. Robert Beatty exceeds all expectations with the sequel Serafina and the Twisted Staff. Everlasting friendships, suspense, devotion and the battle of good and evil captivate the reader on every page. You experience a plot full of adventure and new characters of Biltmore are added to an already spectacular list. You are not only exposed to a sensational story, you are allowed to explore the majestic Biltmore Estate and surrounding landscape. Everything about Serafina and the Twisted Staff is sensational. You will not be disappointed!

A Real Page Turner. Serafina and the Twisted Staff is the second in a series taking place in 1899, just weeks after the ending of the last book (Serafina and the Black Cloak) on the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC. We follow Serafina on the best kind of mystical magical journey from her secret origins, to a deeper understanding of the people and friendships she had forged to her discovery of where she belongs in the world. Beatty delivers a compelling, fast paced adventure. Along the way we learn about the creatures that inhabit the Blue Ridge, meet historical figures, and look into the treachery of the human heart.

Serafina and the Twisted Staff. This book is even better than the first. My daughter and I loved it. We didn’t want it to end.

Loved it!. I couldn't put this book down. I enjoyed the black cloak book a lot but this one was ten times better! Can't wait for the next one.

Awesome Sequel!. Once again, Robert Beatty hooked my students with his Serafina tale! I began reading an advanced copy of Serafina and the Twisted Staff just before school ended for the year. My children were so excited to be able to be a part of a group being allowed to read the book before publication. They had absolutely LOVED Serafina and the Black Cloak and, just as with the first book, they once again anxiously awaited to hear more of the story during our read aloud time each day. They begged me to continue reading at the end of the read aloud time and to add in extra time for Serafina wherever possible as they analyzed the story and made predictions. The lovable characters, enriching vocabulary, exciting scenes and storyline capture the reader's attention and spiral you into a world of elegance, darkness, friendship and mystery. I highly recommend adding both books to your classroom library. Also, check out the wonderful teacher activities and lesson plans on the Serafinawebsite!

Serafina and the Twisted Staff. As an Asheville, North Carolina local for more than 20 years I have grown to love the Biltmore Estate and the land in which it is nestled. It was a great pleasure to escape into a novel that was set within the Biltmore house and grounds during the height of the Vanderbilt era. Serafina and the Twisted Staff was more than a fast-paced page-turner. It was a heart-thumping thrill ride. It was nearly impossible to put down, with most chapters ending in the midst of immense action. An ideal book for classroom read-aloud, this book will delight boys and girls alike. I can already hear the groans of my students as I have to stop reading at the end of a chapter.

Another Serafina Page Turner!. Wow! What an exciting book with adventure on every page. I really enjoyed reading Serafina and the Twisted Staff as a sequel to the first book. The author did a great job tieing in story parts and characters from The Black Cloak. The new characters and villains in The Twisted Staff added such adventure and suspense that kept me reading, even through the scary parts! I love how Serafina is such a strong female character. This is definitely a "good read" for kids and adults, providing twists and turns along the way!

Serafina and the Twisted Staff. I am only 1/3 of the way through this book and I can't wait to have all my questions answered. I feel like I'm right there with Serafina discovering her strengths and finding her true self. I am looking forward to the rest of the series- or even the movies (I can see Meryl Streep playing her Mom).

The Serafina series is Awesome!. "Serafina and the Twisted Staff" continues where "Serafina and the Black Cloak" left off. This series is so visually written that you feel as though you are right there in the middle of all the action. Mr. Beatty has once again out done himself with this book, creating characters that are believable and a protagonist that you root for throughout the story. The fact the story takes place in and around the historic Biltmore Estate in Asheville is a bonus. Thanks for writing another fantastic novel...can't wait to see what Mr Beatty and Serafina do in book 3!!! I highly recommend this book and series. My 6th grade students LOVED book 1!!!

Suspenseful.... Thank you for allowing me to have an advance copy. It was a true joy to read. It held my attention with its suspenseful twists and turns. I love the details about the setting, Biltmore Estates. I have had the pleasure of visiting the Biltmore, and I love how Mr. Beatty wrote about the Estate. I felt it was a great addition to the story. I love the main character, because it is always nice to have a strond female character in stories. - Gina Cummings
