Le Feu by Henri Barbusse Book Summary
Texte intégral révisé suivi d'une biographie de Henri Barbusse. Au moment où éclate la Première Guerre mondiale, Henri Barbusse, bien qu'antimilitariste, décide de s'engager comme simple soldat. Sur le front, jour après jour, de décembre 1914 à novembre 1915, il note ses faits et gestes et ceux de ses camarades. Il obtient deux citations au combat, avant d'être évacué pour maladie et réformé. Profondément choqué par ce qu'il a vécu, il écrit "Le Feu", qui suscite de vives protestations car il peint la guerre dans toute son horreur. Ce "Journal d'une escouade" (sous-titre du livre), récit brutal et émouvant des journées passées dans les tranchées, dans la boue et la saleté ou sous les bombardements, offre un témoignage irremplaçable sur le cauchemar d'une génération sacrifiée. "Le Feu" inaugure le genre du roman de guerre, obtient le prix Goncourt 1916 et assure à Barbusse une renommée mondiale. Sa vie et son œuvre seront désormais consacrées à la dénonciation du bellicisme et à la défense des victimes de l'histoire.
