Jeune intellectuel désargenté, Theophilus North débarque le temps d'un été dans le Rhode Island des années 1920. Dans cette comédie de mœurs à la fois tendre et cynique, Theophilus, tour à tour amant, professeur, médecin, anthropologue et magicien, brosse au fil de ses rencontres le portrait d'une époque. Thornton Wilder livre un roman au charme intemporel qui n'est pas sans rappelerGatsby le Magnifique.
Été 1926. Désenchanté et cynique, un jeune homme de vingt-neuf ans, Theophilus North, s'installe pour la saison à Newport, station balnéaire ultra-chic où, huit ans plus tôt, il a fait son service militaire dans les gardes-côtes.
Enfant, Mr. North avait successivement rêvé d'être saint, anthropologue, archéologue, détective, comédien, magicien, amoureux, aventurier et enfin homme libre. La bonne société de Newport et les personnages singuliers qui y gravitent vont lui donner l'occasion d'incarner tour à tour, et avec brio, ces différents rôles.
North ne se contente pas de donner des leçons de tennis et de français, mais il entreprend aussi de rendre un certain nombre de " petits services ". On le sollicite, notamment, pour déjouer de sordides complots, ramener la paix dans les ménages, jouer les redresseurs de torts, les confesseurs, et même les psychothérapeutes...
Ainsi, de cette avalanche d'aventures drôles, tendres, nostalgiques ou satiriques, notre héros sortira peut-être régénéré et grandi.
Derrière le cadre charmant d'une Amérique révolue, celle de Francis Scott Fitzgerald, se cache un monde de passions exacerbées que Thornton Wilder soumet au scalpel de son humour froid.
