Il problema che ho affrontato in Io e Lui,” disse Moravia in un’intervista, “è terribilmente serio, anche se la veste è comica. È la sessualità, da una parte, personificata in ‘lui’, cioè nella virilità fisiologica e dall’altra parte, la spinta contraria alla sessualità verso una meta artistica, intellettuale, sociale e civile.” Federico, “Rico”, è appunto un intellettuale velleitario, uno sceneggiatore che vuole diventare regista. La sua personalità risulta fortemente scissa: se l’io sta a guardare, lui agisce: l’inconscio parla, il sesso ha una voce che ordina e impone. Ne risulta un andamento esilarante, pieno di invenzioni francamente inattese: nella folle vicenda di questo regista mancato, nel costante dialogo tra il protagonista coatto, il suo sesso prepotente e il suo rimorso culturale (sublimazione o desublimazione?), la nevrosi, interpreta in chiave comica o tragicomica, non è lontana dall’assurdo.
