Sourdough by Robin Sloan Book Summary

From Robin Sloan, the New York Times bestselling author of Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore, comes Sourdough, "a perfect parable for our times" (San Francisco Magazine): a delicious and funny novel about an overworked and under-socialized software engineer discovering a calling and a community as a baker.

Named One of the Best Books of the Year by NPR, the San Francisco Chronicle, and Southern Living

Lois Clary is a software engineer at General Dexterity, a San Francisco robotics company with world-changing ambitions. She codes all day and collapses at night, her human contact limited to the two brothers who run the neighborhood hole-in-the-wall from which she orders dinner every evening. Then, disaster! Visa issues. The brothers quickly close up shop. But they have one last delivery for Lois: their culture, the sourdough starter used to bake their bread. She must keep it alive, they tell her—feed it daily, play it music, and learn to bake with it.

Lois is no baker, but she could use a roommate, even if it is a needy colony of microorganisms. Soon, not only is she eating her own homemade bread, she’s providing loaves to the General Dexterity cafeteria every day. Then the company chef urges her to take her product to the farmer’s market—and a whole new world opens up.

Will recommend for fun read. Fun satire of our modern age

Well written stories with fascinating twists. I fully enjoyed the writing, the characters, and the evolving plots. Very worthwhile.

Cute. This is a good book. I rarely enjoy fiction but this was a good story. It didn’t keep me on edge or anything or up all night but I was persistant to finish it, I needed to know how it ends.

Sourdough. Fascinating story. Well written. Kept me reading and laughing, (subtle humor, but so funny) into the night.

Uhhhhhh . . .. Liked the quirky beginning - then story took a turn to bizarro world that simply lost me. Tried several times but still haven’t been able to finish it

Favorite Book. I never know how to choose a favorite book because I read so many, this one was everything I’ve ever wanted in a story. Can’t wait to read it again!

Even tastier than expected!. Sourdough exceeded my expectations! Having read and totally enjoyed Robin Sloan's Mr. Penumbra's 24 Hour Bookstore, I knew I would enjoy the writing in Sourdough. I had no idea that it would capture my imagination and carry me along so effortlessly. My go-to genre is pretty heavy British and Scandinavian Crime. Sloan is my relief and light. To write first person female in a completely authentic manner is commendable but to bring that together with ambition, fantasy, technology, and a futuristic culture (pardon the pun) is utterly enjoyable. I anxiously look forward to Sloan's next book.
