Inspirado en la propia experiencia del autor como atleta universitario, ilustra el duro trabajo y la dedicación necesaria para llegar a ser un deportista de élite.
La historia se centra en Quenton Cassidy, un corredor de la Universidad del Sureste cuyo sueño siempre ha sido correr una milla en cuatro minutos. Cuando está a punto de conseguir su objetivo, la agitación de la época contra la guerra de Vietnam llega hasta el departamento de atletismo de la universidad. Envuelto en las protestas de los atletas, Cassidy es suspendido del equipo. Tras renunciar a su beca, a su novia, y con casi toda probabilidad a su futuro, se aísla en el campo, donde comienza a entrenar para la carrera más importante de su vida, con la ayuda de su amigo y mentor Bruce Denton, un estudiante de doctorado y ex medallista de oro olímpico. A través de la narración, Parker refleja de manera insuperable y desde dentro la intensa vida de los corredores de fondo de élite y el duro sacrificio que supone trabajar cada día para ser el mejor.
