"Fortune e sfortune della famosa Moll Flanders" di Daniel Defoe, pubblicato nel 1722 dopo il successo del "Robinson Crusoe".
Figlia di una detebuta e allevata da una madre adottiva, inizia a lavorare come cameriera per diventare prima amante di uno dei due figli della famiglia presso cui lavora, e poi sposare l'altro figlio. Diventata presto vedova, Moll sviluppa l'arte di affascinare gli uomini per sposarne uno ricco.
Nelle sue varie fortune e sfortune, Moll si sposa più volte, vive come mantenuta, va anche in bancarotta ed emiga in America, torna in Inghilterra e viene arrestata per furto. Imprigionata, riesce a convincere del suo pentimeento e viene deportata in America dove eredita una piantagione di cotone.
Tratto costante del libro è il denaro. Tutto, comprese le persone, ha un valore monetario e tutte le azioni vengono calcolate e compiute secondo il guadagno che possono dare. Altro aspetto del libro e farci domandare se compiere qualcosa di immorale per bisogno sia veramente immorale.
Daniel Defoe, (1660 – 1731) viene frequentemente indicato come il padre del romanzo inglese e soprattuttto ricordato per essere l'autore di Robinson Crusoe. Suo padre era un membro della società dei macellai e mercante di candele, ma Daniel modificò il proprio cognome da "Foe" al più aristocratico "Defoe", arrivando in alcune occasioni a dichiarare di essere un discendente della famiglia De Beau Faux.
Poté sposare la figlia di un ricco mercante, ottenendo una dote di 3.700 sterline. Finì in bancarotta, pagando anche con la prigione. Riuscì a risollevare le proprie condizioni dando inizio a una serie di attività: una fabbrica di mattoni, un servizio di consulenza per il governo, e qualche pubblicazione come saggista.
Scrisse anche vari romanzi, fra i quali "Fortune e sfortune della famosa Moll Flanders" e il "Robinson Crusoe".
