In Melancholie I-II beschwört Jon Fosse das Leben des norwegischen Malers Lars Hertervig herauf, der leuchtende Landschaften malte, an psychischen Störungen litt und 1902 in Armut starb. Fosse imaginiert die Ereignisse eines Tages, die bei Hertevig zum Zusammenbruch führen.
Düsseldorf, Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts. Lars Hertervig studiert als Schüler von Hans Gude an der Kunstakademie. Er ist verrückt nach Helene Winckelmann, der Tochter seiner Zimmerwirtin. Aber das Mädchen ist gerade fünfzehn Jahre alt, Hertervig darf sie nicht lieben. Heimgesucht von Halluzinationen und ohne festen Wohnsitz pendelt er zwischen einem Café, in dem er den Spott seiner kultivierteren Klassenkameraden erträgt, und der Wohnung der Winckelmanns, die er verzweifelt zu betreten versucht - ein Schwebezustand, der ihn unaufhaltsam in den Wahnsinn führt. Schließlich wird er in seine Heimat abgeschoben. Die Diagnose der Ärzte: Melancholie.
