An excellent read.. I remember years ago, my grandfather had given me the sequel of this book (The Polar Star) as a gift. I read it and loved it, so much so that I wanted to read its predecessor, the first in its series. I opened an account with my local library and rented the book for a week, it was (in my humble opinion) even better than its successor. My family emigrated from the Soviet Union to America in 1988, and I was brought up in a household (that to a degree) still practiced Soviet traditions. Although, as an adult, I recognize the horrors of the Soviet Union throughout its existence, I’ve always had this weird infatuation with Soviet culture and the way everyday people lived their lives in a world so vastly different than the West. This novel provides a glimpse into that life that to this day I still find intriguing, featuring a compelling story with likable and interesting characters against the backdrop of normal people just trying to live their lives within the confines of the evil empire.

Gorky Park. The movie starring William Hurt came out in 1983. The book came out a while before that and was a decent read. However, the price is WAY too high for a decades old book!
