So worth the wait!. This book is excellent. I missed these characters, and it is great to have them all back. This story takes place in between the first and second novels, so you could read it directly after the first. However, I’d recommend reading it after finishing all the originals. It is just so much more satisfying that way. I truly hope there are more Black Company novels to come!

Poor showing. Worst entry into the series. Phoned in and utterly boring.

Not for the casual Cook reader. If you love Glen Cook for what truly makes his style immersive and visceral, this is a tour de force. If you’re just looking for the equally satisfying, if somewhat less fulfilling, fantasy fodder...look elsewhere.

A half-hearted entry. There’s not much of the Black Company in this book. All the characters undergo major personality shifts that are waved away at the end. Plot and continuity holes abound. This ranks as the least enjoyable, least interesting and least important entry in the series.
