First Man In by Ant Middleton Book Summary

No one is born a leader. But through sheer determination and by confronting life’s challenges, Ant Middleton has come to know the meaning of true leadership. In First Man In, he shares the core lessons he’s learned over the course of his fascinating, exhilarating life.

Special forces training is no walk in the park. The rules are strict and they make sure you learn the hard way, pushing you beyond the limits of what is physically possible. There is no mercy. Even when you are bleeding and broken, to admit defeat is failure.

To survive the gruelling selection process to become a member of the elite you need toughness, aggression, meticulous attention to detail and unrelenting self-discipline, all traits that make for the best leaders.

After 13 years service in the military, with 4 years as a Special Boat Service (SBS) sniper, Ant Middleton is the epitome of what it takes to excel. He served in the SBS, the naval wing of the special forces, the Royal Marines and 9 Parachute Squadron Royal, achieving what is known as the ‘Holy Trinity’ of the UK’s Elite Forces. As a point man in the SBS, Ant was always the first man through the door, the first man into the dark, and the first man in harm’s way.

In this fascinating, exhilarating and revealing book, Ant speaks about the highs and gut-wrenching lows of his life – from the thrill of passing Special Forces Selection to dealing with the early death of his father and ending up in prison on leaving the military – and draws valuable lessons that we can all use in our daily lives.

Insightful. From what I understand if you are honest with yourself then you can achieve anything you want. You have to be able to build and look into a brutal personal mirror and have the discipline to not smash it to pieces when you see something you don’t like.

Honest and inspiring story of positivity overcoming all. I have always liked the tv shows associated with Ant but never known the story behind the man. This book gives an account of how his life has gone on a rollercoaster by using a mix of stories from his life and lessons he has learnt. It is reflective but not self centred and massively inspiring as it demonstrates what one can achieve with the right mental attitude.

Amazing.. Straight to the point, raw and real. One of the best books I’ve ever read.

Brilliant, finished it in a week. I couldn’t put this book down between working and being a dad and a husband great read!

Unbelievable. Can’t remember the last time I sat down and read a book. I read this sat on a sun bed in Tenerife and read it in the space of 3 days. This is a fantastic read and has inspired me with his words. Read this!

Superficial but interesting.. I’m intrigued by the type of people who make it in the SAS. Ant’s story alone is interesting enough, I found the very surface level ‘what it takes to be a leader’ stuff a bit cringe.

Great read. As ex army the experiences in this book resonates with me and the problems that can be caused by promoting people’s failures rather than their successes. We are all human and the book clearly shows that even those who we admire sometimes fall from Grace but it’s how they fall and land that makes the difference and Ant demonstrates this clearly.

A must read. End of.. A truly fantastic book. Ant Middleton has experienced more things in his 37 years than most of us will have to deal with in a lifetime, yet in the way he has written this book, he manages to use those experiences to help anyone who picks up a copy, understand the sort of trivial day-to-day issues they may be going through. We can all learn something from the summary points he makes in each chapter and there are certain lessons in the book which I am sure everyone will either be able to associate to personally or for a friend. If you’re looking for an exciting page turning read, buy this book. If you’re looking for something motivational, buy this book. If you’re looking for something educational, buy this book. If you’re looking for something that will lads the time whilst on holiday or stuck on your daily commute, buy this book. I’ve never read a book so quickly in my life, and I can’t wait for the next. Ant, you’re an inspiration.

My First Book. I’m 21 years old and this is the first ‘proper’ book I’ve read completely. I’ve never really been interested in books as I’m much more of a kinetic learner. However, this book has tailored itself to allow me and I’m sure many others to learn many, many things. At quite a young age I’m always trying to better myself in anyway possible. This book allowed me to form questions to ask myself that I could never have conjured up without it, so that I can answer them honestly and realise what’s important and what I need to do to change things about me that I don’t like as much as it could appear to others. 100% would & will recommend to everyone and anyone. There’s no doubt in my mind that at least 90% of the population will benefit from this book in one way or another.

Started off great. I loved the first half of this book, just listening to his experiences but the second half dragged on a little

Inspiring.. Decent book, some good advice and admire him and what he’s achieved from what seems like a rollercoaster of a life.

First man in. Brilliant read!

Brilliant read!. Brilliant from start to finish, now onto the fear bubble.

Fantastic. Absolutely a fantastic read. Highly recommend

Fantastic. First book I have ever been able it read and dedicated myself to - absolutely brilliant!

Best book I’ve ever read. I’m an avid reader and don’t usually leave reviews but this requires one, this book if you read between the lines will literally change your life. Absolutely outstanding

Brilliant book.. No matter what, even when times were difficult Ant kept pushing forward. Inspiring book!

Amazing!!!. Just couldn’t put this book down, it’s changed how I feel about life and how positivity works and how to tackle negative forces. Amazed with this book and could read it time and time again. Well done Ant Middleton on achieving amazing goals!

Fantastic read from start to finish!. Thoroughly enjoyed reading this, now to start the next book!

Fantastic.. Absolutely brilliant read, what an incredible guy. He went through so much but still managed to come out on top. Read the book in a day and half, didn’t want to put it down and I don’t usually read the 1st chapter of books let alone finish them.

...meh.... It’s kind of like an autobiographical self help book. You get a couple of paragraphs of tosh about things like “making an enemy your energy” at the end of every chapter. The chapters consist of various tales of the author breaking someone’s jaw for one reason or another. Anyone who thinks the Author is a jumped up thug will not be disappointed.

Fab book. Amazing read Couldn’t put it down

Fantastic. Fantastic book I finished it the same day I bought it. The best part for me was the boat story truly gripping.

Excellent. I’ve read his latest book the fear bubble and was inspired. I then watched his documentary on Everest and was inspired, this book is the same. Great honesty and realism. Ant is a true leader and I’ll take his advise into my day to day life

The Power of Positivity. A gripping read throughout, teaching some valuable lessons along the way. Whether you like Ant Middleton or not, it doesn’t matter.

Wanted more. I thought this was a great book and read it on holiday, but felt like it missed out big elements of Ants life obviously some of it is classified but it would have been great to learn more about Ant and more about his personality and thinking and how he developed it. However, I would thoroughly recommend this book for Ants honesty and his ability to summarise simply his views on being a leader. I will definitely be reading more of his work.

While the title, ‘First Man In’, might suggest macho but it’s completely different :). While the title, ’First Man In’, might suggest macho culture and how to be a ‘hard guy elite soldier’, the book in fact addresses the battles with the inner voice possessed by all. By sharing experiences from a wide range of environments that are alien to most of us, life-threatening scenarios requiring acute focus have forced Ant to really settle his debts with his demons, embraced them and allow them to empower him. This account of a wild and wonderful life should be read by anyone who’s found themselves or those close to them in trouble when striving hard to achieve their goals.

Inspirational. Inspirational story of how Ant became who he is today. Great read.

Really good read!. Really good read! Was a good insight into his life and before his “fame” . One of those reads where you just keep turning the page.

Ant Middleton first man in. Amazingly honest, and incredibly inspirational!!!

Great. I struggle to find a good book that I can't put down. This has been the exception. It was page turning and written in a way that I was dying to hear more. Good read!!

Great book. Great book.

First man in. Not what I was expecting respect to the man but this book just glosses over too much it’s as if it’s a tester to see if people will read it then he’ll bring other books out slowly releasing snippets of his remarkable life to fund his lifestyle just bring a book out about your time in the special forces warts and all and that will be a best seller

Awesome read 👍. Lessons in life can be learnt from this book. A real insight into army life and what it takes to be the best of the best.

Boring.. Nothing to write home about.

Motivational. Really good read from a very interesting character! Have seen all Ant’s TV shows but this book gives you a great insight into who he is as a person and how he has grown into the man he is today.

First Man In. Perfect read!

Excellent. I was really glued to this book and taking in Ant’s advice regarding leadership! Thanks Ant

Truly inspiring. Gave me the motivation to grit my teeth and begin to make changes. Fave quote which I use now is the part where pain shouts and you shout back at it

Brilliant. Great read, a brilliant life story and truly inspiring!

First man in. Class from start to finish

Badly written. By an egomaniac.

Brilliant. I’m not a person that often reads books but a friend recommended it to me to read. I was hooked from the start, the book gave me the urge to re think how I look at things in life it was eye opening. I would recommend this book to anyone.

Ant Middleton First Man In. Lightweight, dull

Get on board.. Thoroughly enjoyable and inspiring. Despite being an avaricious reader in my teens I’ve struggled to get even halfway through most books since but this pulled me along beginning to end. The combination of enthralling experiences, pitfalls and huge achievements coupled with sage conclusions and acquired self-awareness along the journey absorbed me for the better. Recommended.

Thank you very much. Due to the lack of confidence in my self I read your book and now I know where was I weak and where I need to work on.

Great Read. Got to give it to him what a book , respect this guy so much and he deserves every bit of it , great information about his life and his lessons learned what an inspirational character Mr Middleton is and has become.

Inspired. A truly inspirational book which shows that with determination control and self belief, big things can be achieved.. thanks for sharing your story

Fabulous read. A great book for which I have taken many elements to improve my life.

Overcoming adversity to lead from the front. In this book Ant describes the ups and downs of his life and the leadership lessons he’s gleaned from the experiences. There are some cliche leadership moments/lessons and some of the chapters feel unfinished (I feel some detail was missed). There is also very little talk about his time in the SAS/SBS. However, there are some very interesting experiences portrayed by Ant and they really bring to life the self-development / leadership points.

Wow!. Where do I even start to articulate what I have just read ? Yes it may have taken a mont or so but I had to stop so many times to really sit back and reflect on the words he was “saying”. This is a book I will forever keep. I am definitely going to buy a hard copy and read it over and over again so much so it will be worse than my Harry Potter book stuck together with sticky tape! - (I think I will need a metric tonne of glue to keep it together after I’m done) this book will forever be in my top 5! Thank you Ant! Please write more and more the knowledge and experience you have is something I could sit down for hours listening too! Xx

Insightful and meaningful storytelling. Great easy read , powerful lessons intermingled with some great storytelling

Interesting overall. You have to respect someone who has achieved the holy grail but I expected ant to detail how he has managed his internal rage or is he still a ticking time bomb ?

Pretty interesting life and offer unique perspectives on leadership. He probably has his reasons but I wish he went more in depth with the sbs field work he did rather than jumping to the boat reenactment part.

A page turner. I started this and then 7 hours later I finished it. I couldn’t put it down. What an inspiration to all. Regardless of age and experience there is something to learn from someone who has seen and felt the highs and lows. Thank you for such an amazing story and so eloquently told. Highly recommend.

Great read. Fantastic account Anthony I will tip my hat

Fantastic. Fantastic read. Couldn’t put it down

First Man In. A great read that helps you take a good look at yourself, written in a way like a good mate is having a chat and sharing their experiences. Really relatable .

,. One of the most interesting, insightful & applicable pieces of work you could read.
