Zum ersten Mal nach zwanzig Jahren kehrt Joel zurück in sein Heimatstädtchen an der schwedischen Westküste, um seine demenzkranke Mutter zu pflegen. Seit ihrem Infarkt ist Monika nicht mehr dieselbe, und schweren Herzens bringt Joel sie im Seniorenheim unter, wo sie sich zunächst zu erholen scheint.

Eine von Monikas Pflegerinnen ist Joels Jugendfreundin Nina. Seit zwanzig Jahren haben die beiden nicht miteinander gesprochen, und so schmerzhaft sich ihre Wege damals getrennt haben, so schmerzhaft ist jetzt ihr Wiedersehen.
Und als sich die beklemmenden Vorkommnisse im Heim häufen, findet Joel ausgerechnet in Nina eine Verbündete, um dem Grauen entgegenzutreten.
