La Calandria es la primera y para algunos la mejor novela de Rafael Delgado. Con ella, el autor se dio a conocer en el panorama literario mexicano y adquirió gran fama y reconocimiento, los cuales supo mantener con su producción ulterior.
Mediante un argumento sencillo en el que se narran las desventuras amorosas de una joven inconforme con su lugar en la sociedad, el novelista veracruzano supo plasmar con maestría sus inquietudes literarias e incluso personales, las cuales pueden resumirse en la siguiente consigna: la literatura debía reflejar la realidad nacional.
Es, pues, esta novela un rico muestrario de expresiones, costumbres y lenguaje de los mexicanos de una época en la que, gracias al talento de este insigne escritor, los lectores contemporáneos tenemos la oportunidad de adentrarnos.
