Excellent book!!. This book was very enlightening for me, an older heterosexual white woman. What a beautiful soul the author is and so brave and kind to tell his story to help others going through the same things he went through. He impressed me so much! I’m so glad I learned of this book and had the opportunity to read it!

An amazing and truly relatable read!. This book validates many of the feelings I had growing up in the 1970s. This should be a mandatory read for all teenagers; gay or straight, and especially for lawmakers trying to divide people for political gain.

Spectacular. George M. Johnson is an amazing author. The way he elegantly describes the experience of a black gay male in a heteronormative society is truly remarkable. As a fellow black queer individual, I saw many parts of myself being talked about in this book. My inner child is jumping for joy as I am confronting trauma from my childhood. THIS IS A MUST READ

An Essential Read!!!!. This book brought me to tears, made me laugh out loud and feel so proud to be apart of the LGBTQIAP+ Community and black all at the same time. This book was so on time and should be added to every high school reading syllabus. I just want to say thank you for telling your story and telling our story George M. Johnson.

Truth hurts, yet it heals that which lies cannot bandage.. I was drawn to this book, maybe the book was drawn to me. However which way you may want to put it I could wholeheartedly empathize with the lyrics of the Fugees classic hit “Killing Me Softly” as the author captivated my pain with his letters, writing my life with his words, killing me softly with his memoir, telling my whole life with his words, literally killing me softly chapter after chapter. inspiring and relevant. a wonderful story for young adults who, much like the author, may be struggling with the navigation of contrasting identities. although I am neither Black nor queer, this book provided commentary on the LGBTQIAP+ community in a way that allowed me to be educated and impacted, whilst being immersed in one man’s inspiring story and entertaining anecdotes. this book encompassed a gorgeous story telling ability, along with larger life lessons that anyone from any walk of life can appreciate. given the current social and political climate, this is an especially relevant read. highly recommend.

Amazing!!!. Amazing and eye opening.

I still want more!. I appreciated the poetry of his writing as well as his transparency. In many moments, I found myself wanting a more in depth understanding of the layers being explored in real time (which may be less appropriate/necessary for a YA book). He did a good job of trying to address those kayers with authenticity for how they occurred in the moment and then reflecting on his understanding as an adult. As a teacher, I’ll definitely be recommending this book to my students.
