Stoner es uno de los fenómenos literarios más resonantes de la última década. Convertida en un inesperado best-seller (ha sido traducida a más de veinte lenguas), fue publicada originalmente en Estados Unidos en 1965, y reeditada por Vintage en 2003 y por New York Review Books en 2006. A partir de entonces, la novela no ha dejado de ganar lectores y ha cautivado tanto a la crítica como a escritores de la talla de Ian McEwan, Bret Easton Ellis, Enrique Vila-Matas y Rodrigo Fresán. Stoner es, quizás, una de las novelas más conmovedoras que se hayan escrito en Estados Unidos durante el siglo XX.
William Stoner, protagonista de la novela, nace en el seno de una familia pobre de agricultores de Misuri a finales del siglo XIX. Enviado a la universidad estatal para estudiar agronomía, su vida da un vuelco absoluto cuando descubre su amor por la literatura inglesa y decide convertirse en profesor. La enseñanza y la literatura se vuelven así un amparo ante la sucesión de experiencias amargas que sacuden la vida de Stoner, cuyo desarrollo la novela acompaña hasta sus días finales. Este es el retrato de un hombre entrañable y tenaz en su búsqueda del significado de la amistad, el amor y la muerte. Como Jay Gatsby y Holden Caulfield, William Stoner es un personaje inolvidable.
