The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid Book Summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

“If you’re looking for a book to take on holiday this summer, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo has got all the glitz and glamour to make it a perfect beach read.” —Bustle

From the New York Times bestselling author of Daisy Jones & the Six—an entrancing and “wildly addictive journey of a reclusive Hollywood starlet” (PopSugar) as she reflects on her relentless rise to the top and the risks she took, the loves she lost, and the long-held secrets the public could never imagine.

Aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now?

Monique is not exactly on top of the world. Her husband has left her, and her professional life is going nowhere. Regardless of why Evelyn has selected her to write her biography, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jumpstart her career.

Summoned to Evelyn’s luxurious apartment, Monique listens in fascination as the actress tells her story. From making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the ‘80s, and, of course, the seven husbands along the way, Evelyn unspools a tale of ruthless ambition, unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love. Monique begins to feel a very real connection to the legendary star, but as Evelyn’s story near its conclusion, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique’s own in tragic and irreversible ways.

“Heartbreaking, yet beautiful” (Jamie Blynn, Us Weekly), The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is “Tinseltown drama at its finest” (Redbook): a mesmerizing journey through the splendor of old Hollywood into the harsh realities of the present day as two women struggle with what it means—and what it costs—to face the truth.

OMG, this book is a MASTERPIECE! 🤩👍Previously, in my review of Project Hail Mary: No book is perfect. I take that back; this book is perfect. It’s been my TBR list since before it even came out. I got an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) a couple months before the release, had every intention on reading it, and for some reason didn’t. Over the years since its release, I’ve heard time and time again how good it is, and time and time again I told myself that I’d read it, and didn’t. Well, I’ve finally given in. And I must say, this book deserves ALL the hype. It achieved something that no other book has, it’s the only book to ever make me fight back tears. And is a strong contender for what might be my favorite love story of all-time. 😭❤️ “When you’re given an opportunity to change your life, be ready to do whatever it takes to make it happen. The world doesn’t give things, you take things. If you learn one thing from me, it should probably be that.” An unforgettable journey through time and a raw look at what many people are willing to do for fame, but never loses sight of what is most important. “When you write the ending, Monique, make sure the reader understands that all I was ever really looking for was family. Make sure it’s clear that I found it. Make sure they know that I am heartbroken without it.” On top of being one of the most compelling life stories ever told, the entire book you’re wondering why Evelyn has chosen Monique to write it, and the reveal is 1000% worth it. The last line is the perfect encapsulation of this book. From the beginning, and throughout reading it, your interest is in her seven husbands. But by the end, they become nothing more than moments in her life, and you’re much more interested in her and her true love. A perfect love letter to the LGBTQ+ community. 👩‍❤️‍👩 When I do my 2022 wrap up & review, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo will no doubt be my pick for the best book I read this year..Score: 5/5
