The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid Book Summary

“If you’re looking for a book to take on holiday this summer, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo has got all the glitz and glamour to make it a perfect beach read.” —Bustle

From the New York Times bestselling author of Daisy Jones & the Six—an entrancing and “wildly addictive journey of a reclusive Hollywood starlet” (PopSugar) as she reflects on her relentless rise to the top and the risks she took, the loves she lost, and the long-held secrets the public could never imagine.

Aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now?

Monique is not exactly on top of the world. Her husband has left her, and her professional life is going nowhere. Regardless of why Evelyn has selected her to write her biography, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jumpstart her career.

Summoned to Evelyn’s luxurious apartment, Monique listens in fascination as the actress tells her story. From making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the ‘80s, and, of course, the seven husbands along the way, Evelyn unspools a tale of ruthless ambition, unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love. Monique begins to feel a very real connection to the legendary star, but as Evelyn’s story near its conclusion, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique’s own in tragic and irreversible ways.

“Heartbreaking, yet beautiful” (Jamie Blynn, Us Weekly), The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is “Tinseltown drama at its finest” (Redbook): a mesmerizing journey through the splendor of old Hollywood into the harsh realities of the present day as two women struggle with what it means—and what it costs—to face the truth.

Amazing. This book will take you on a rollercoaster of emotions. It is beautifully written. I hate that it took me so long to finally read it and sad that I finished it in one day.

Literally everything. This book was everything that I needed and more. It kept me guessing, and it kept me on the edge of my seat. It’s one of the books I’ve read the fastest recently and I couldn’t recommend it more to anyone else.

Dragged the story line. I just think the author dragged the story line way longer than I preferred

Gorgeous. Show stopping spectacular

Did not enjoy. Did not enjoy

Shallow. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo isn’t a novel so much as a list of hot-button social issues. I gave it an extra star because it was a quick read, even though I felt manipulated after, and because it’s thought-provoking and it sticks with you, even if those thoughts are questions about why so many people like this book. Also, my entire book club thought the narrator was annoying.

Could not put it down. LOVED this book.

5 million stars. The way I would take a bullet for this book.

Awful and politically charged. Political. Biased. Racist. Promotes narcissism. Evelyn is a horrible person. This book is about lesbian love and how 2 lesbians use men to further their ambitions. It’s a total anti-family commentary. Not entertaining and a waste of time. Too many other great books to read - don’t need the negativity and “woke” cult rhetoric!

10/10. I didn’t get over this book for weeks

Not for me. I don’t know why so many love this book.I found it ridiculous and unbelievable. Lesbians and gays are probably the ones loving this book. Great so we know the discrimination they experience and still do. The best part about this book was the twist in the end about who the died in the car crash and of course finally finishing it.

Love this book. I think this book is well-written with an interesting plot, relatable characters, and has valuable themes that apply to issues today. This is one of the best books I have read in a long time.

Great book. I LOVED THIS BOOK! Absolutely amazing in my opinion

Couldn’t put it down. Really enjoyed this story very much. The characters were intriguing and the reality of the historical tapestry woven through is intriguing and educational.

Phenomenally Different. Not only was the story epic, but the split narrative was genius. One of the best books I’ve read all year.

7 husbands…... I was not expecting to like this let alone LOVE this!! Beautifully written…wonderful story…huge twist that I knew had to happen but had NO IDEA what was going to happen. 5 ⭐️! Summer fav! ❤️❤️❤️

Not enough words.. There is not enough words to describe just how amazing this book was. This read kept me on my toes. Along with the many plot twists (some I truly did not see coming). I highly recommend this book. I promise you will not be disappointed.

My heart. I want to read this for the first time always

Poorly written. I was so overwhelmed by the overuse of cliches that I couldn’t even find a narrative thread.

Loved it!. I read right through this book and could not put it down! Excellent story!

Adored this book!. I’m not one for drama in books, and I wasn’t sure I’d like this book but it felt like the more I read, the more wrapped in the story I got. I don’t think I’ve felt for a character more than I do for Evelyn as a teen who struggles with sexuality. Especially with her struggles with stereotypes. Absolutely love this book!

Loved it!. Read this book without any knowledge of what it was about. I loved it! Kept me sucked in the entire time.

Meh. It was just ok

The seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo. This was the best book ever 10 stars like I cannot say anything bad about this, but you need to read it now

I would give it a sixth star if I could. There’s a reason why this is one of the most recommend books right now. That’s all I have to say.

Amazing story. The story unfolds in a certainly unique and unexpected way that throws the audience through a loop

Good Read. I am a fan of retro Hollywood, this book is an entertaining and clever look at the life of a fictional Hollywood star. It mixes scenarios that could be based on real-life legends and present day memories wrapped up nicely in the making of a memoir. It kept me engaged throughout, 👍👍

Loved it!. Such a great read about a strong wonderful woman and the decisions to live life on her terms.

Wow…. Never a dull moment. Great great writing. I loved every twist. Wow.

What a Journey. Very unexpected, quick witted, and emotional.

Nice storyline!. I really enjoyed this book. Several twists on the plot that I did not get us ahead of time which is always nice. And the words and script were good because I had a visual of everything going on in the book. Kind of reminded me of Elizabeth, Taylor, and all of her husbands.

Must read!. It was amazing, couldn’t put it down! Such emotional writing, I connect immediately to the characters ❤️

Would recommend to anyone!. Such a good book with a mini mystery laced throughout. I’m excited to see what the adaptation is like now!

Wow. This book was written so well!! Definitely not what I expected at allllll.. it does start off a bit slow but then it keeps going and you won’t be able to stop reading!

Nearly perfection!. Such a page turner! I enjoyed reading about how dynamic Evelyn was. Just when I thought the answer was clear, Evelyn showed me it was not.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. A great read with a plot filled with as many twists and turns as the roads in Hollywood Hills! If you think there is “a” definition for love or marriage, think again!

Loved it. Took a while to get into but once I was, I couldn’t put it down.

Incredible!. This book is amazing! It’s the best book I’ve read in a decade . I take a lot for me to get into a fictional book I typically read non fiction but THIS was amazing ! Definitely put it on your read list

Meh. Bad

At a loss for words. This book moved me deeply, and I cannot recommend this book enough.

.. .

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo Review. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is a fictional novel that explores the life of Evelyn Hugo who has had seven different husbands over the span of her lifetime. For unknown reasons, she hires a writer, Monique, and gives her a tell-all with the hopes that she will publish a biography. Throughout the book, we get to learn about Evelyn’s in depth life story and learn in the end why she hired Monique in the first place. I’m happy to say that I’ve read a book by TJR before and I’ve enjoyed it. I enjoyed reading this book as well. The book was raw, interesting and suspenseful at times. I loved how complex Evelyn’s character was and I grew to have a deep understanding and appreciation for how flawed she was. As a person who enjoys historical fiction / context, I liked the emphasis on identity and the impact it has had on Hollywood throughout the decades. For me, that’s what shaped Evelyn’s character and made me have a deeper understanding for her. I would love to see this adapted into a film!

The best fiction book I’ve read in a long time. This book made me enjoy reading again. To the fullest. Wow. What a story. Had me at every page. Every detail was so developed and dedicated. 10000/10

Evelyn is that girl!. Everything that glitters ain’t gold but that’s Hollywood for you! Love is always love 💚

Hard to put down. This book had me wanting more, clapping, crying and at times worried for the characters. It is so well written! Loved it!

Astounding!. I don’t think I have ever read a book in two days! I couldn’t focus on anything else, but Evelyn Hugo!

Loved this book.. Couldn’t put it down. Wasn’t sure what I was expecting but it far exceeded my high expectations.

Woke.. This book was far to “woke” for my liking.

Not what I expected but intriguing. It really felt like a biography of someone I am reading but really is quite fascinating. There are times I must admit I complained coz it does feel like a biography but it still made me feel the need to read more as the glamorous life she shows. Still a very good read in my book and 1 of my top 5⭐️.

I couldn't put it down!. It's an easy and enjoyable read! I was hooked immediately and grew to love to characters.

Get it!. It was soooo good I could not put it down! The plot-twist at the end was well done. You won’t be disappointed!

Pleasantly surprised. Read this book without knowing anything about it before beginning. The final few chapters of this book left me with tears rolling down my cheeks. When I started reading it, I was skeptical, thinking it was going to be a long, drawn-out fluff piece. When it came to her first kiss with Celia I realized it would be a little more than that. Then I finished the whole book in one sitting. Topics like bi-erasure, bisexuality, true love, family love, and loss are central themes. Well written book, unique story. Can’t wait to read more by the author.

Great read. Great current themes and captivating read

Boring. Didn’t like that book. It’s long and boring. I finished it because I don’t like not finishing a book and going onto the next right away, but I suggest you don’t start that book.

Fabulous. Breathtaking. Heartbreaking. I seriously could not put this book down. Old Hollywood and modern day meet in this story. You will not be disappointed.

Great Book. Love the timeline of this story. Mostly loved Evelyn Hugo 😌

Great title. A real page turner…I didn’t want to put it down and I didn’t want it to end!

Disappointing. The true meaning of love is lost on this author. A story chalked full of lust and women demonstrating masculine traits. Wouldn’t recommend.

4/5. It was slow paced at times, but the story is super emotional and deep. The ending was unexpected, and had me in tears. TW: abuse, some sex scenes

IT HAS EVERYTHING. Incredible read. I could not put this book down. No matter your topic of interest, it seems to touch on all of them. Beautiful story of love and hate and humanity. MUST READ!

Loved it and I’m not much of a reader. I’m not much of a reader but I loved the book and can honestly see this being made into a mini series or movie. The ending took me by surprise but the author has a good way of story telling and character development. I recommend this to anyone who wants to get into reading.

Not bad. It’s an easy read- the story moves along swiftly and there plot twists and turns to keep you interested. But the writing and character development are lacking subtlety - every trait and thought is spelled out and explained as if the main character’s therapist wrote it. The language is simple, which isn’t necessarily bad. I just didn’t find it memorable. Not something I’d read twice.

Not that interesting. The book is a simple easy read with predictable ending. I just plowed through it because I bought it. I wouldn’t recommend it

Incredible…. This book got me hooked from the beginning, the ending pulled at my heart strings.

Couldn’t put it down. Incredible story with a twist I did not see coming absolutely amazingly written

Exceptional. There is something so beautifully tragic about Evelyn Hugo’s story, so much so that it completely captivated me for 5 hours. Amazing read, thank you.

Captivating!. I felt anger, sadness, frustration, love, gratefulness, and relief while reading this book. I loved it, and I hope to be a little more like Evelyn Hugo in my own life now.

Overrated!. I think this book is overrated. Don’t get me wrong the storytelling is exciting about the many lovers of a Hollywood actress. But with all the reviews and hype I read from book recommendations, I was expecting more. I don’t know. I will command the love story in this book is compelling and original. I guess you never really know the true lives of celebrities. It goes to show who manipulates the media to shelter or control their image. Great book but too much overhyped in my opinion.

Read it already!. You’ve seen this everywhere and even if it doesn’t seem like your usual thing, just read it now. Now!

Nothing is black and white. I loved how the main character Evelyn shows us that nothing is ever black and white. No relationship or event and reactions to so are uncomplicated. I quickly became attached to learning about Evelyn and found myself wanting to know more. I just wish the book was longer!
