Il monaco by Matthew Gregory Lewis & Antonin Artaud Book Summary
“Voglio la tua anima. Voglio che sia mia, mia per sempre!” Ambrosio, monaco dell’ordine dei Cappuccini di Madrid, è conosciuto in città per la sua saggezza e la condotta virtuosa. Fino al giorno in cui scopre che il discepolo con cui ha un profondo legame è in realtà una fanciulla, Matilda. Caduto in tentazioni sempre più torbide, Ambrosio ricorrerà alla magia e al demonio nel tentativo di celare i propri crimini all’Inquisizione. Considerata uno dei capolavori di quella letteratura nera e sublime che canta il male solo per estenuare il lettore e fargli desiderare il bene per rimedio, l’opera di Lewis viene riscoperta dai surrealisti e Antonin Artaud, nel 1930, decide di farne rivivere la grandezza. La sua non è una traduzione o un adattamento ma, come dice Artaud stesso, “una specie di copia in francese del testo originale”. Egli usa il testo di Lewis come materiale grezzo, modellandolo in profondità per rendere il ritmo più incalzante, l’intreccio più intricato, come il dedalo di gallerie sotterranee teatro di alcune delle scene più cruente del romanzo.
