Grace enough to melt the coldest heart. Christine Dillon’s fifth book in the “Grace” series is another work of wonder. Like her previous novels, this one continues to tackle the difficult themes of selfishness and pride; forgiveness and reconciliation; grace and redemption. I found it particularly easy to relate to the main character, a 50-something year old bloke who thought he had it all: great career, great wife, great kids. Little does he realise that these are all gracious gifts from a generous God. Gifts to be treasured and nurtured, and not to be taken for granted. As with Christine’s other books in this series, ‘Grace Beneath the Frost’ can be read as a self-contained, stand-alone story. Earlier references to characters and events don’t require any prior knowledge or an in-depth understanding of what’s gone before. Yet, all five stories intertwine and overlap so seamlessly that it would be a shame not to enjoy the many complex characters Christine has so carefully brought to life throughout the series. Characters who enjoy love but endure loss; who suffer pain yet pray patiently: who rejoice gladly for all the good things God has given them, in spite of their myriad flaws and failings. And, if there’s one common theme that runs straight and true through all her books like a vein of precious gold, it’s grace. Grace so abundant it’s overwhelming. Grace enough to melt the coldest heart. Christine’s books are a wonderful encouragement to followers of Christ, especially in this novel which looks closely at discipleship and how we equip, model, and mentor younger Christians. Yet it also poses a gentle challenge to non-believers: to look carefully at the person of Jesus Christ and thoughtfully consider his life-changing claims. As with her last four novels, this one left me wanting more: more of her insightful and heart-warming characters; and much, much more of her God - our faithful God - who hears and answers prayer.

Five Books and Counting. I have read all five books in the Grace series and have enjoyed all of them so far. I especially loved this book as it focus on how we are a witness to everyone whether we get to see them living a Christian life or not.

What a journey!. An engaging storyline that is believable and realistic. At the same time – what an amazing and incredible journey to faith! This book genuinely encouraged me to think more about the power of prayer – even a fleeting cry of a feeble yet genuine heart is heard and answered. This book also examines real family dynamics, at the same time challenging the reader to seriously contemplate the Christian faith. A great read for sceptics and believers alike.

A Spin-Off That Did Not Disappoint. Grace Beneath the Frost is the spinoff in the Grace series that I waited five years to read and it did not disappoint. This book hooked me and I couldn't put it down. Christine Dillon's books are comfortable with grappling with the hard realities of life yet offer hope. This book is about a man who has to discover what is important in life and the cost he is prepared to pay for it. Disclaimer: I was given a free e-copy of this book to read, but have since purchased my own because I think it’s worth it.

Inspiring read. The Grace series book 5 is an interesting story about a respected Cancer Specialist who has his own set of challenges in his personal life. God doesn't forget the prayers for and testimony of His children for unbelievers, from days gone by, and continues to answer these prayers. God is at work in this Oncologist's life and it is encouraging to see the way He begins to transform his life at a time when things are falling apart for him. A really good read.

Deep and nuanced. Delightful fifth instalment! Some old friends and some new characters, and lots of added depth. Dillon is very real about the ups and downs of being a Christian in (nearly) contemporary Australia. The ending hits the perfect note.

Engaging literature that is Biblically based. I was very excited when I found out that there was a new book in Christine Dillon's Grace series, but at the same time it took me a while to warm up to this story and be fully drawn into it. I think this was because it is such a long time since I read Esther's part of the story and had forgotten so much. Also, the meetings between Paul and Dan felt awkward - which they definitely would have been - and made me feel a bit uncomfortable. But as I started to recall events from the previous books, to warm up to Paul as a person, as well as appreciating the wisdom of people that came his way, like Joy and Stuart, I became fully engrossed in the story and found it hard to put down. I enjoyed getting to know Paul, Wendy, Lauren, Ben and Russ, feeling their pains, struggles and triumphs. As I made my way through Grace Beneath the Frost, I had many ideas in my head as to how the story would, and should, end. Thankfully, Christine had very different ideas to me and after I read the final chapter, I felt that it was just perfect - so much better than anything I had imagined or wished for! As always, I felt both encouraged and challenged by the Biblical truths that Christine wove into this story, and was left with many ideas to ponder. This was particularly so in regards to prayer. Whenever you come face to face with God and His word, there is so much to learn and so much to prayerfully work towards.
