Something to Hide by Elizabeth George Book Summary
An Instant New York Times Bestseller!
Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers and Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley are back in the next Lynley novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth George.
When a police detective is taken off life support after falling into a coma, only an autopsy reveals the murderous act that precipitated her death. She'd been working on a special task force within North London's Nigerian community, and Acting Detective Superintendent Thomas Lynley is assigned to the case, which has far-reaching cultural associations that have nothing to do with life as he knows it. In his pursuit of a killer determined to remain hidden, he's assisted by Detective Sergeants Barbara Havers and Winston Nkata. They must sort through the lies and the secret lives of people whose superficial cooperation masks the damage they do to one another.

Don’t waste your money or time on this mishmash. What a debacle! I’m wondering if Elizabeth George used a ghost writer because everything about the writing is sub-par and gratuitous. The story drags on and on with many repetitions of descriptions and blatant discrepancies. It was hard to keep the TOO many characters straight, the switching scenes and timelines were exasperating, plus the constant, trite preaching about Black vs White animosity drove me to distraction. The murderer was utterly lame, absurd, and beyond all belief. The author also turned Tommy into a needy, whiney, sap of a wimp, and Barbara into a slovenly, chain smoking caricature and not in a charming way. I love Havers, in this book I wanted to hand her napkins and drag her to a laundromat! The book was a tedious and disappointing waste of money. I gave it two stars only because of the endearing portrayal of Tani. And YES, omg, yes, we get that FGM is an atrocity. And as for clingy Pete and slimy Mark…if I’d rolled my eyes many more times they’d have popped out of my head. Why were they in the book at all? Stupid! Elizabeth George lets us down big time. Bring back the quality writing of former books. A definite no-go!
Not my favorite. Very long and meandering. Could be a couple hundred pages less and lose nothing. And I like long books if the writing is worthwhile. I’ve read most all in the series and like the characters generally. But not so much in this book. And I’d like Daidre to be gone. Can’t believe he’s wrapped in her.
Something to Hide. Very difficult topic (female mutilation) plus murder. Not easy topics but very informative for the un-informed
Too many words. Plodding, slow moving. So many disconnected storylines (that I hope get connected). I couldn’t stay awake to finish it. And I tried 'cause I really have loved her books.
Ready for the next Lynley series book!!. I have read all the Inspector Lynley books by Elizabeth George. This last book was the best of them all—and I have loved each book.
KUDOS TO ELIZABETH GEORGE. Interesting characters and story. Kudos to Elizabeth George for shining a light on FGM. I had never heard or knew about this subject until reading this book. Although the subject matter is disturbing, the book is a good murder mystery. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, especially the ending. They should make a movie from this book.
Interesting subject. The plot involves traditional rituals of African immigrants in London, a complicated murder with almost too many twists and turns. As usual,I find George’s books too long. Story could be shortened up.
Something to hide. Very disappointing. A sacrifice of character and plot for global warming and white privilege shaming.
Something to hide. Another well researched book in a wonderful Detective series
Something to Hide. As usual, this is another outstanding book by a wonderful author. Just beautiful writing. This book brings FGM to our attention and helps us understand the horrors of this practice. It is uplifting to read the stories with such morally centered characters with integrity and fortitude. Really love all the detectives and their methods of kindness, intuition, strength, and fairness.
Way too long. Too much about heat! Too much about Havers. Too many plot threads! Needed to be about 300 pages shorter! A shame as the main plot thread was important! And hate to say it but getting tired of Tommy! The guy needs to man up!
Something to hide. Not one of her best. All over the place???.☹️😦
Repeat, repeat and repeat again. I’m not usually a reader of Elizabeth George and I certainly won’t be again. If there ever was a book written to meet a goal of a certain, large, number of words this is it. It’s like stone soup except the outcome of the numerous ingredients in this case is not tasty. I’ll give Ms. Georgia something; she kept me skimming through the pages to discover the denouement of the various threads she had woven for the characters to follow. More fool me, I should have stopped reading it.
Great Writing- Boring Content. I’ve read all the Detective Lynley books. I found this book equally well written, but the storyline terribly uninteresting.
