The Serpent by David Drake Book Summary

Jon of Dun Add has created a civilization where before there had only been isolated pockets of humanity in a shattered cosmos.

Young knight Pal is one of the most respected members of Lord Jon’s Hall of Champions. But Pal’s greatest talent lies not on the field of battle, though he’s no slouch there. He is also a Maker, one who can repair the tools the Ancients had left—sometimes. Moreover, he has learned to use his warrior dog’s ability to predict motion better than any human could, an ability that has saved his skin and won the day more than once.

Now, Pal will need all his talent—as a fighter, as a Maker, and as a Champion—to deal with the monsters the Waste throws at him—and to deal with his fellow humans. For there are those who would destroy Dun Add and Lord Jon’s vision of a humanity united in peace from within . . .

The Serpent. I find it most telling that others cannot figure out this is a tie in to the rest of the stories that are coming. David Drake not NOT leave his fans in the lurch! So far Pal has operated in the way I would have expected from his character! Not a huge book, but for the price… more to come! I await!!

Entertaining Followup. Anyone who enjoyed the previous two books in the series will likely find some enjoyment in the further adventures of Pal of Beune, with this caveat. Pal seems to settling into his role as a Champion, but this is more a collection of tales without a larger story arc to tie them together. Still a pleasant read if you enjoy Pal’s company.

More Drake. I enjoy reading Drake’s writings. His character’s seem 3 dimensionally human, though generally not particularly complex. Of course the subject matter doesn’t really demand complex characters to make a story that seems realistic. Perhaps it is the difference between land (Hammer’s troops) and sea (e.g., Aubrey, Hornblower, and ? Leary).

Short. More disjointed than the first two books, but not as satisfying as a collection of short stories.
