The War of Two Queens by Jennifer L. Armentrout Book Summary

War is only the beginning…

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout comes book four in her Blood and Ash series.

From the desperation of golden crowns…

Casteel Da’Neer knows all too well that very few are as cunning or vicious as the Blood Queen, but no one, not even him, could’ve prepared for the staggering revelations. The magnitude of what the Blood Queen has done is almost unthinkable.

And born of mortal flesh…

Nothing will stop Poppy from freeing her King and destroying everything the Blood Crown stands for. With the strength of the Primal of Life’s guards behind her, and the support of the wolven, Poppy must convince the Atlantian generals to make war her way—because there can be no retreat this time. Not if she has any hope of building a future where both kingdoms can reside in peace.

A great primal power rises…

Together, Poppy and Casteel must embrace traditions old and new to safeguard those they hold dear—to protect those who cannot defend themselves. But war is only the beginning. Ancient primal powers have already stirred, revealing the horror of what began eons ago. To end what the Blood Queen has begun, Poppy might have to become what she has been prophesied to be—what she fears the most.

As the Harbinger of Death and Destruction.

I really wanted to love it…. I’m going to talk spoilers bc I can’t address what bothered me without it. I’ve loved this series for Poppy & Casteel’s relationship, and I’ve loved Kieran’s character and wanted him to find love too. But after the Joining, now this seems like it’s going to be more of a throuple between Cas, Poppy, & Kieran and I just….that’s not for me. It feels like it lessens the relationship between Cas & Poppy now. There’s an imbalance. Cas & Poppy are married. They’re king and queen. Platonic friendships can be just as important as romantic ones. I don’t know why she didn’t just have it stay at that. The Joining needed to happen so Cas wouldn’t die before Poppy. Kieran needing to be that bridge is a bonus bc we love him and don’t want him to die. However, now it’s weird. They’re all three cuddling and holding hands and just…no. It didn’t have to be that way. They could’ve still had that platonic bond and it not have been sexual. But besides the main issue, this book took me over a month to read because it just seemed to drag on and on. And I say that as a person who has been flying through my TBR this year. I remember loving the first two books in this series so much that I read both in less than a week. I feel like she is really good at endings, they always hype me up for the next one, but the beginning and middle has kinda been boring these last few books. I’m still going to read the rest of the series, but I hope they get better pacing-wise. And I really hope she doesn’t make Kieran, Cas & Poppy an actual throuple.

Don’t waste your time. If I could give this book less than 1 star I would. I never leave reviews on here but with this one I had to. This book ruined the entire series, ruined Poppy & Cas’ relationship, ruined their characters, this whole thing was awful. It’s like she wrote really bad fanfiction of her own characters & then published it. Won’t be continuing with this series.

I love this series. I read this book faster than I would have liked, but the series is just far too well written. I love that this book had chapters and parts from Casteel’s perspective rather than just Poppy’s. The ending is sort of a cliff hanger- okay it’s definitely a cliff hanger, but I’m okay with waiting for however long I need to for the next book ! Kinda wrapped stuff up, kinda didn’t, but I’m not going to spoil it for you so don’t worry. Either way, this is probably one of my favorite series, if not my favorite ever. So excited for the rest of the books to come out and blow my mind and take up all my time just like the first four books did!

Oh my gods. I’ve read each book of this series so far. The story line is great and so is the love story.. I can’t figure out who’s hotter Cas or Kieran?! But there are ALOT of different gods and worlds and the story of their creation and demise etc.. U cannot pick up any of these books wo reading previous ones. I found myself rereading a few chapters to get a better understanding or clear up confusion.. Overall a good read, I’m looking forward to book 5.

EPIC!!!!. Sooooooo incredibly good! READER! Don’t listen to these NUTS! The WHOLE series including this book ROCKS! One of the best series EVA!!!

OKAY, VERY SLOW and boring at times. Story is very long and very boring in places. Sex scenes between Cas And Poppy are detailed and boring. I do not care where Cas put his lips, his fingers and his penis on Poppy. Very , Very. boring and is not necessary for this story. I read all four books in this series: Book # 1 promising of a good story to come. Book # 2 slow and boring. Book # 3 Very repetitive , boring not interesting. Book # 4 slow , boring And happy to finish this series. August31, 2022 Pepper Freeport New York

So, so. Loved the good parts, but this book was more of a “filler” than anything else. Loved it anyway tho.

Blood and Ember series. Wow this series so so amazing and intense and very much so an adult series. Penelope and Castell relationship is wow oh wow but the storyline and characters will keep you up all night so be prepared! I’m not a big reader so what does that tell about Jennifer’s books?

Absolutely loved it. I absolutely love this series! Every book that comes out becomes my new favorite. There are plenty of people out there that didn’t like the direction this one took, but personally I loved it. The connections these characters make are beautiful and the plot comes to a great turning point. I can’t wait for the next release!

Wow!. Amazing series!

Loved it. The War of Two Queens is the fourth book in the Blood and Ash series and is best read after A Shadow in the Ember which is the first book in The Flesh and Fire series that shares the same universe as the Blood and Ash series. I just absolutely loved getting to reenter this amazing wonderful. I was just drawn into this wonderful story and I was just captivated by everything that was taking place. My emotions were just all over the place and I just felt so much for these characters and all that they have to go through. You just can’t help but fall more in love with them after each story. I can’t wait to see what’s next from this author.

Good but could be better. I enjoy the books but wish the author would tone doesn’t the erotica a bit. It happens too often for it to be useful to the plot.

Tedious mostly. There was an opportunity for the plot to really become something based on how we ended it last book but the bag was fumbled. Even the dialogue between the main characters is becoming stale.

The War of Two Queens. OMG that book was hard to get through. The action is so sporadic and spaced out. I had to force myself to finish this book because I’m not a quitter. I feel as though this book was so full of unnecessary storylines and heritage references. What I find the most odd is how boring the entire book is and how the ending just seemed super rushed.

I need the next two !!!. So amazing

love it. I started reading this series in my book club, and instantly became obsessed. I finished all four books within a week. I can’t wait for the story to continue.

Slower than other books in the series. I really like this series, but this book in particular was just slow throughout much of it. I blew through the first 3 books and this one just kept losing my attention. I love the story and will continue reading the series, but this one just wasn’t my favorite.

Best on earth!. Absolutely amazing!!!

Dragging…. This book could have been cut in half and the plot/romance would not have suffered. Author spends three books developing/describing a relationship as singular, rare between two protagonists so much so that when Kieran and poppy’s friendship grows she makes sure say it’s different from the relationship between poppy and cas and that it’s not romantic. Poppy/cas/kieren share a friendship that is clearly established throughout all the books. So the “Joining” didn’t add to their friendship, bond, or character development, it simply made it sexual and cheapened the Actual friendship and the romance story she has been building up for three whole books. Not impressed

Amazing. Another incredible piece in this series! Cannot wait for the next installment, truly the best books I have read in years.

Just amazing. I read this book in about 2 and a half days and I am just obsessed! I absolutely love this series and cannot wait for another book!!

Ahhh. I got sucked in… I need more. Lol

Good read. This was a fun read. I love the story.

Fabulous but long!. This was a great book full of everything we’ve come to expect from this series! It had twists and turns in every chapter. Poppy and Cas’s love was powerful and amazing. Poppy coming into all that she is was a great way to continue the story! My only negative (if you have to have one in a review) is it was long. There were parts of the story that perhaps, in my humble opinion, could have been omitted or shortened. However I would never give advise to an author this amazing to do something to their writing that might make it less. That’s why she does the writing and I do the reading. It’s a fabulous read and most importantly, I’m hungry for book 5, but the ending left me at peace and ok waiting patiently for the continuation of epic story. Please hurry Ms. Armentrout!!

Perfection!!. I ate this book up! Literally read it in three days and couldn’t put it down. It was EPIC!!!

Very Disappointing…. I’m sorry I really wanted to like this book but it dragged. Hard. The dialog was bad, the action was short and not of the caliber I expected, lastly the plot twisted so many times I gave up caring. The premise deserved more than this. It felt like a deadline needed to be met and everyone just said eff it! Go to print! I’m so disappointed I paid for this.

YALL ARE HATEFUL. THIS BOOK IS GREAT. This is amazing. Truly encompasses what I was looking forward to and expecting! But not expecting all at the same! This was intense, thought out and well planned! Y’all are hateful people, you knew what was going to happen, she eluded to it in BOTH books before this. If y’all don’t like it, that’s fine. But don’t act shocked. Thank you for this book Jennifer! I loved every second.

Great with one exception.. Great book the amount of sex scenes gets old in this last book. I would still recommend the series.

Perfect. Everything I hoped for and more! I cannot stop reading these books, well done!

Disappointed. Like mentioned in other reviews, its was very long for no apparent reason, the book could have been concluded in a hundred pages, that's how much filler this book had. It’s as if the first book and this book were written by completely different authors, it’s that bad. I don’t recommend reading, this series started off promising but I recommend stopping after book two.

Emmm... first three books are absolutely amazing! It was addicting and hard to put down. But I think the book went awkward when the joining happened though, it’s so weird to have a sexual relationship with your best friend and his wife omg, it was unnecessary and they could’ve stopped. I really really hope the relationship stays between Casteel and Poppy, we don’t need another Jacob(also wolven ha!) between Edward and Bella

Loved it. Unbelievably fantastic. Can’t get enough. Characters are great…story is so good. Never a dull moment

Amazing. Her books are amazing. Period. I was kept in suspense and awe through the whole book. What a page turner. Can’t wait to read the next.

Read it. Stop looking at the good reads or one star comments. It is still a Poppy and Cas love story with world building still the theme. No one is emotionally cheating on anyone.

Outstanding read!!. This was one of the best in the series. I cannot wait for the next one!!!

Meh. Not what I want in my Protagonist. Warning: Semi spoiler below regarding character relationships. I’m a fan of her work but this one was simply not as good as the others. Dragged on quite a bit with no real purpose. And yeah I know “the” sex scene was eluded to in the books leading up to it but it was still gross. Despite the “I’m a strong female who makes her own choices with no regrets” narrative, all it did was perpetuate the stereotypical and purely male fantasy. Could be that other readers enjoyed it—to each their own and all that—but I found it disappointing and icky. Doesn’t mean I won’t read the next book in this series—I probably will—but first I’ll read to reviews to see if that particular type of relationship continues. I’m thinking (hoping) it was a one time thing. But if there’s more of it in there, I’ll skip the rest of this series.

Why Isn’t this series a movie yet!. Love these books!

Amazing No Words. This book was amazing I couldn’t put it down. There are truly no words for her genius writing

The most boring book I’ve ever read. It took me 7 months to finish this book because I could not physically make myself read more than a few pages at a time. No spoilers however, the entirety of the book is the main group of characters running in circles. Not one single thing of interest happens until the VERY ending. I quite literally could not recall anything of importance because it was THAT boring and uneventful. One other thing is the witty banter. Every single conversation is cringeworthy and childish and that’s usually where I ended up putting the book down for days or weeks. This series has progressively gotten less and less interesting with each book and I cannot fathom what the next book could entail. Very sad because I loved the first book and this series had so much potential.

At odds. Great ending - too drawn out throughout the book.

I have to agree. With everyone who said the sex scene with Poppy, Casteel, & Keira cheapened the friendship. The book’s plot was way too drawn out with the ending being the only decent part of the book. It’s a shame since the other books were good.

Loved it. Best book of the series yet. The one liners, the plot, the hints to flesh and fire, loved it all!!

Wow. I loved all the books and can’t wait to see how far the continuation will go!

Amazing!!!. Can’t wait for the next books!!!!!

Amaazziinnggg!. Gah I have no words! This book was everything! My #1 series by far! Just amazing!

Not so impressed. This book went on and on, at some point thw middle wasn’t too interesting anymore. And then the JOINING. The whole sex scene with kieren, cas & poppy. Wasn’t really necessary. After spending 3 books building thier relationship (cas&poppy) she has to crash it with this throuple. Phew 😮‍💨 it’s a no no

World changing events. Casteel has been captured. Poppy has to find a way to free him and fight the war her mother has incited. There has been some controversy regarding how certain things were portrayed in this book. I’m going to address this right off and say that I do not feel that the author was in any way unfaithful to the character and story development she had established In previous books. This book begins almost immediately after the events of the last book. There is so much forward movement of the plot that sometimes has t can be overwhelming to remember everything but in the end it all pays off. I love how in-depth the world building is and how the author brings her characters to life. I am so excited to see what happens going forward.

The War of Two Queens. Pre-ordered this finale book of the series. I felt the ending was rushed into one chapter and the sexual content was too over the top and repetitive. If you like hard core sexual content then this book would be a 5. I was just disappointed in the ending and skipped thru the repetitive sex between Poppy and Cas.

Disappointed. The love relationship between poppy and Kieran has gotten weird and uncomfortable tbh and I’m not here for it!!! I loved the friendship they were building from book 1 to 3. Now Kieran and poppy are LOVERS, too? I’m so confused 😕 idk if I’m going to finish the series but I do hope moving forward with the other books the author makes some changes with her characters.

Love this series. I personally love the relationship between poppy, cas and kieren. This series is full of twists and turns and I’ve loved every book!! Can’t wait for the next one.

Errrr. Love the FBAA series but so disappointed with this one.

Can’t wait for the next book. Amazing storytelling

Disappointing. I struggled to read this one, however the others I devoured in a day. I just wasn’t feeling the direction this book has been taken in and felt there was less of Poppy and Cas which is why I was reading really and this isn’t my usual book choice. Feeling a little deflated after finishing it

😬. not my favourite of the series but can’t deny that poppycas goodness 🫡

Can we get the next book already!?. Absolutely 10/10. Story line, characters, action - all ADDICTING! Obsessed.

Epic!. Jennifer has entranced me yet again with another book in this series. Possibly my fave book yet, seeing everything in the previous books come together stopped me from being able to put it down. Despite what other readers have said about this book ruining the series I think it was incredible to see events foreshadowed in the previous books finally take place and answer so many questions. I look forward to the next one.

Intoxicating!. Couldn’t stop reading, such an amazing book!! Can’t wait for the next one.

War of two queens. Ugh. These books. This is one of those series that you simultaneously never want it to end but also you just want to get to the end of the story and find out what happens to everyone! Love the mystery and adventure of the story and I’m trying to guess all the twists and turns along the way. The only thing that annoys me is the whole thread of doubt that Poppy might end up being bad… like come on. She’s definitely going to end up being good and we all know it. So let’s just stop pretending. If you liked the first three then you’ll like this one. I feel like it’s been so long since I read the first books that I’ll need to go back and reread. It is spicy but not really until the end half of the book. Dual POV, mid-high level spice, 18+

TWOTQ. So disappointed in this book. Can’t believe she ruined Cas and Poppy.

Series went downhill. Was really not a fan of the previous book in this series but thought it was worth persevering as first two books were great. But it just gets too complicated to the point were I was so bored I skipped pages, which I never do usually. Undecided if I will try the prequel.

Bit stop-start but beautiful!. I personally found it difficult to finish because there was so much info which was necessary. So other than the stop-start - beautiful!

Thoroughly entertaining. I’ve been submerged in the world of blood and ash for two weeks now, having read the entire series back to back. I haven’t been so consumed by a book (or several books!), well, ever! I love the fantasy, the characters and the wanton romance. Especially loved the evolving relationship between Poppy, Cas and Kieran, and how that only adds to the bond between the queen and king. Cannot wait til the next instalment is ready!!!

Couldn’t put it down. Can’t wait for the next book!

Stunning. Enthralled from the first page, absolutely loved it!

Mind Blown. This book exceeded all of my expectations. It was well worth the wait. I absolutely adore structure of this book. 100% would recommend!!

Did not Disappoint!. Amazing! Can’t wait for the next one! JLA has melded this world so well!

CHARACTER ASSASSINATION. A lot of my favourite characters from the previous books became very one dimensional, made stupid choices and were poorly written. No character development in this story. The pacing was also really bad, it did not need to be 1000+ pages.

Slow & Repetitive. I love this series, but this book was disappointing. It drags on & on with the same dialogue and situations repeating. I predicted every “twist” so even that was a let down. I had to finish the book because I wanted to see how the series ends- just to be left with no conclusions. To summarize this book: Poppy mad. Ether. Kieran sweet. Casteel horny. Poppy Powerful. War. Gods. The end. It didn’t add much to the series or storyline so sadly I have to give it 1 star.

Character Plot Departure. I fell in love with the FBAA series and was grossly disappointed with this latest instalment. The author completely changed the characteristics of the main characters to create new love interests that do not follow the first three books AT ALL. It's a huge letdown to see an author who has spent so much time investing in one plot to then change that plot entirely as well as her character's personalities in a way that doesn't make any sense. Creating sexual tension between Poppy and Kieran while Cas is imprisoned was beyond weird after the author had spent three books establishing that Poppy and Kieran have a sibling-like relationship and that Cas and Kieran are bonded. If you liked the heartmate relationship between Cas and Poppy and the friendship they shared with Kieran, this instalment changes that relationship drastically in a way that does not conform with the first books and was a huge let down to know that the author ruined a really well thought out story.

Amazing!. It was amazing I loved the whole series, the plot the romance the spice absolutely everything and I would read it again in a heartbeat

Loved It. *potential spoilers ahead* I loved this book. I think the world that Jennifer L. Armentrout has built is so interesting and getting to see her two series intertwine was incredibly satisfying. The bonds between characters are growing in this book and I personally am a fan of how they progressed. Were some of the plot devices a little convenient? Yes. Am I mad about it? Nope. I was relieved at the end because she had me devastated for about a minute. It might not be “realistic” but I’m reading a fantasy romance and I want my favourites to be well at the end. I think JLA delivered on this book and I am eager to read the rest of the storylines!

My least favorite so far.. I love this series and gobbled up the first three books and eagerly waited for the release of this one. It’s still a good read, but comparatively, I found this one to be a bit boring and not nearly as engaging as the first three books. It had a different vibe altogether. I found the build up to be a bit dull and much of the storyline felt poorly constructed somehow. It felt a bit untidy with too many bits and pieces scattered about. I still love the series though and I will of course read the next book and hope for more of what was in the first three books.

Review might have spoilers. I really loved this series. I couldn’t read the first three books fast enough. This last instalment is a little disappointing… the pace is very slow… i’m halfway through the book and im forcing my self to continue to read… ***halfway through poppy and cas haven’t physically seen each other yet… geez. *** I really don’t think this book needed to be over 1000 pages long. I feel bad about my review because i really loved the first three books.

Loved the first 3 books but…. This book essentially dragged on for 50 chapters in what could have been told in less than 20. Each “plot” twist was the same repetitive scene/battle/predicament. Also, the 3 full chapters of *spice* was annoying, didn’t add any value to the story. You could save yourself the grief and read the first 10 and the last 10 chapters, yet still have the entire story together. As everything is hinted throughout the book but nothing is revealed until the last 2 chapters.
