A Soul of Ash and Blood by Jennifer L. Armentrout Book Summary

Only his memories can save her…
A great primal power has risen. The Queen of Flesh and Fire has become the Primal of Blood and Bone—the true Primal of Life and Death. And the battle Casteel, Poppy, and their allies have been fighting has only just begun. Gods are awakening across Iliseeum and the mortal realm, readying for the war to come.

But when Poppy falls into stasis, Cas faces the very real possibility that the dire, unexpected consequences of what she is becoming could take her away from him. Cas is given some advice, though—something he plans to cling to as he waits to see her beautiful eyes open once more: Talk to her.

And so, he does. He reminds Poppy how their journey began, revealing things about himself that only Kieran knows in the process. But it’s anybody’s guess what she’ll wake to or exactly how much of the realm and Cas will have changed when she does.

#1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout revisits Poppy and Casteel’s epic love story in the next installment of the Blood and Ash series. But this time, Hawke gets to tell the tale.

Hard Pass. Series hits the skids and go absolutely nowhere with this book. Nearly complete re-type of the first book with nothing new or interesting enough to make the book worth the time. I’d say this is where I leave the series but it feels like the author has already abandoned it.

Worse than clickbait. Probably written by ChatGPT or a creative writing student. This is just the exact same story as the first book from a different point of view. Fool me once …

Disappointing. Fun to read but was almost entirely a reiteration of part of the first stories from Casteel’s point of view. Not much development of the plot line. Seems like a filler novel they knew they could sell without much effort put into the story.

What a waste of time. I gotta give it to the author... this was a smart money grab! Literally the same exact book as the first, just adding a few lines to indicate it's from Casteel's perspective. Remember back in the day and shows would have a flashback episode that would come in and out of past and present?? Yea, well, this was that... nothing vital or interesting is really discovered. Nothing that can't just be added to the next book. Whatever. I feel a little salty and betrayed by the author for pulling this . She better make it up to me by making the throuple thing happen in the next book!

I didn’t want it to end. I loved hearing the story from Cass’ point of view. Loved every second of this book. Already antsy for the remaining books to come out.

Disappointed/annoyed. This book was 99% of Cas just retelling the story over from his POV. I found myself skipping through most of the book just to get to the chapters that were about the present. I was hoping to read more about how Poopy,Cas, & Kieran’s relationship develops and how they fight off their next threat and meet the other awakening Gods. I’m honestly not looking forward to the next book either because that one seems like it will be random stories of different characters from Willa’s POV not a continuation of the story.. This series was one of my favorite book series this year so I really didn’t want to write a bad review but I had to be honest on this one.

I liked it but it was so uninteresting. Having read the other book from poppy’s perspective and no cas def was slightly annoying but I was Bree rereading what had already happened just from his perspective and I was so excited for what was going to happen after the war and some more relationship stuff between the two after their reunion .

Too much cheesy sexual chemistry. Second book overkills on the cheesy passionate sex talk. Kind of makes the romance seem boring oddly enough. The storyline gets lost to me too. No motivation to read book 3

Just a retelling.. This entire book is filler material. Not worth your money as there is no story progression in this book. After the last book and then this one, I have officially DNF’d this series.

A Soul of Ash and Blood. Loved getting to see Cas’s point of view from the original book!! I enjoy all the extra details that further add to the story. You also get some glimpses into what to expect in the upcoming book with some surprises. Great book and a must read before the nest book comes out!!

From Blood and Ash: Casteel’s perspective. I have loved this series, but this book was disappointing. The “Present” moments in this book were unnecessary, as this could have been added to the next book in less than 100 pages. Overall it felt incomplete and rushed. In this book, the majority was spent on going over every moment in “From Blood and Ash” from Casteel’s perspective - which I actually liked , however it kept getting interrupted by the “present” moments (which were again, unnecessary and unimportant). Every moment , starting from the beginning of blood and ash was rehashed from Casteel’s perspective - UP UNTIL the moment in where Casteel tells the group and Poppy during dinner, that Poppy is now his fiancé (for the first time in From Blood and Ash) and then it abruptly cuts to the present and he then quickly rehashes the rest of their relationship to a sleeping Poppy. After having us read 90% of the book in where Casteel rehashes every moment from his perspective, the fact that it then entirely skips the most important moments in their relationship , moving into a very rushed ending in the present , it feels rushed and incomplete. It would have been much better to just title this book “From Blood and Ash: Casteel Da’Neer perspective “ I would have bought it anyway and would have enjoyed it much more. Instead I felt like the ending was just rushed and sloppy. I hope the next book is not disappointing.

Read!. As everyone else had said it’s a retelling of the first book, but if you love Cas then it’s a must read!

Nice refresher!. I honestly loved seeing Cas POV from the first book and getting to know what was going on that Poppy had no idea about. I feel like it should’ve been like a .5 version or something but I read it just as intently as i did the rest of the books. I love how much he loves her and how he sees her! Im so ready for the next one though, that was a huge cliffhanger and I really hope I don’t have to wait another year for a new book 🥺 I might cry! I need more!

Astoundingly disappointing. Ridiculously cheap move, to essentially re-release the first book as part of the main series. And even if it was released as an extra spin-off project, what was the point? There was basically nothing revealed that we didn’t already know from Poppy’s POV, no new character development or deeper understanding of Cas. It was like she used control F and replaced “he said” with “I said.” I don’t read YA expecting beautiful prose and literary genius, but this felt like a purposeful slap in the face to readers.

Disappointed. Don’t get me wrong was an interesting read but with the previous book ending with such a cliff hanger in the story I was disappointed to not have any progress in the overall story plot with this book.

Perfect Mix of Past and Present. This book is mainly a Casteel POV of FBAA (Book 1) with short chapters based in the present immediately after TWOTQ. I don’t know about you, but getting the love interest’s POV is always THE BEST. I don’t care if I already know what’s going to happen, I don’t care if it doesn’t advance the story. It’s like getting to read the book all over again but from the other side. The part of the plot that takes place in the present doesn’t advance very much, but it does give you some new information. Not a ton, but it’s not as if nothing new happens at all. I enjoyed the back and forth and I loved reading exactly what Casteel was thinking when he met and fell in love with Poppy. Give it a chance.

I love it!. People need to stop complaint. This book is in cas point of view like it was advertised. I absolutely love it and have fallen more in love with cas because of it!

I still want more….. After waiting for what feels like YEARS for the next book in the series, I was initially very disappointed that this book was a retelling of the first book, even if it was from Casteel’s perspective. That being said, I have to admit that once I started reading the book, I did get drawn into the narrative and I did end up enjoying it very much. I especially liked getting to see more of Kieran and Casteel’s friendship and their planning of Poppy’s abduction. I am a huge fan of Jennifer’s writing, and love her ability to create new and different worlds, and I am still desperate to see how this story plays out. So I will be anxiously awaiting her next release.

A+. Incredible…. But I read the whole book in a day, and now I’m left hanging until the next one comes out. 😭😭 Loved the book and the characters. Jennifer tells such amazing stories.

Lots of fun. Lots of fun to read. Enjoyed from the beginning to the end. Can’t wait for the next one.

Glad I didn’t listen to the reviews. I gotta say I was really excited to start this book after finishing the last. That quickly disappeared when I started to read the reviews. I’m glad I pushed through my hesitation. It’s written from Casteel’s perspective and it does cover previous events. I don’t consider those things to be uninteresting or insignificant. I enjoyed the entire book and I’m excited for the next.

expected more. as the title states, I was looking for an continuation of the story but instead it just back to the other books making it quite tedious. I’m giving four stars only because it’s very well written.

Nothing new added to story!. Very disappointed and frustrated. Taking too long between books and with this one there was no advancement to the story, just a different perspective of what has already been read. Feel cheated after waiting so long… :(

Anxiously waiting for more. Thank you Jennifer! I adored this book and the ability to step behind the eyes of Cas and his beginnings with Poppy! I can not wait to find out what happens next! Please be soon!

Disappointing. This should’ve been a novella and half the price. Annoyed I spent so much and waited so long for 0 plot progression in the series.

Seems like a cop out. It’s not a very good retelling so I skimmed a lot of it. She’s getting really good at those cliff hangers though huh? Can’t wait for the next book though just wasn’t waiting all this time for a perspective retelling.

Sadly Disappointed. It seems that most of the negative reviews all agree that this book should have been a novella as 90% is just regurgitated from the first novel. It does nothing to really push the plot of the series along except for maybe the final 10 pages that seemed rushed and disjointed. It’s not that I wasn’t interested in Cas’ retelling, it’s just not what I was hoping for. I hate that we’re going to have to wait a year to actually get a book that pushes this of series along buy go ahead and read it because you have the time but don’t say it high expectations.

A waste of time…just get it from the library. Truly a waste of time reading and purchasing, save yourself some time and money by getting it from the library and read the first and last chapter. I’m so annoyed that this wasn’t the actual ending of the story. A re-telling (a generous word to use as much of it was the exact same…) of the first book. So disappointed…

Not what I expected. I was a bit disappointed I usually will read a book in three days, but this book took me like two weeks. It was nice to hear Cas side of the story but i don’t think the whole book should of been that way. It was dragging moving slow. I thought we would at least read about poppy waking up from stasis and going into her prímal powers. I just expected more action more or the story instead of Cas.

Extremely Disappointed. I’m a fan of this series but this book was unnecessary and I’m resentful. It feels disingenuous that you would try and loop the development of story in with a retelling. A retelling should be optional for fans that want a different perspective. This was marketed as a necessary book for the main storyline. There are only 2 chapters that do anything to evolve the story. I was willing to put up the retelling because I thought the main story would develop throughout, but this was not the case. The description states “only his memories can save her”…really? How do his memories save her? Why is this question left unanswered when it’s the first line in the description of the book? This would only be the case if she doesn’t remember anything, which isn’t even revealed to us. “But it’s anybody’s guess what she’ll wake to or exactly how much of the realm and Cas will have changed when she does.” …this indicates that she’ll actually wake up and discover these revelations in this book, not that it’ll be a cliffhanger for the next book. Additionally, I’m very disappointed that the next book in the series is also outside of the main storyline. I feel like these are things that should be release after a series is complete. It comes across like the author is trying to milk fans of every penny possible before the end of the series. I will not be purchasing the next book. I guess we have to wait until 2025 for the main story to continue?

disappointing…... this book showed no progress after the cliff hanger in the last one. all it was is a retelling of the first book from cas’s perspective. which was still good, don’t get me wrong. it’s just a let down to have waited so long for this to come out and then to get zero progress on the series except for the tiniest bit in the last 10 pages.

Soul of Ash and Blood. It was disappointing basically re-reading the other books in the series in Cas voice. It would been better with a bit of that and then continuing more on developing Malik/Millie and what happens next.

No original Content. I really wanted to love this book because I love JLA and this series was the first to bring back my love of reading. But I am seriously upset and frustrated by this book. For starters- this should not have been considered the 5th book in the series because it is actually 98% filler and 2% plot development. It would have been more accurate to release this as a novella as Cas’s POV. It is actually just a recap of the entire first book. What angered me the most was when I realized that there were 4 chapters that were literally copy/paste from a bonus chapter she released years ago depicting Cas’s POV at the Red Pearl. I love supporting my favorite authors but I feel cheapened by spending $30 on a book that is almost completely recycled filler. I would have loved it as a novella or if the story was told from Kieran’s POV too or incorporated more than just the first book. But I’m just left really disappointed and wanting more than this had to offer. It kills me that we’ll probably have to wait a 1 +year to have any kind of forward progression in the storyline. So disappointed.

A new sexy perspective. It’s rare to read erotic fiction from the male point of view and I loved it. Sure the storyline was one you’ll know, but Cas’s telling is HOT. I enjoyed this book immensely just for the ending alone. When is the next, post-compendium installment?!

Disappointing. A rehash of a story we already knew. Doesn’t move the story forward at all until the final 10 pages. Save your money and wait for the next book.

Disappointed. Felt like I was reading Book 1 all over again. I kept hoping for more and thought certainly this will wrap up soon and the story will continue, but no, it just left me disappointed.

I liked it. Yes this is a retelling of the first book from Cas’s POV but I thought it was fun to see how the story unfolded for him. Can’t wait for the next one.

Exceeded my expectations. Loved! The story progressed and we got background to everything going on with cas in the first book that we never knew about.

Disappointing.. Book is literally just Casteels POV, no advancement to the plot line and story progression. Very disappointing especially with the knowledge that the next book won’t be progressing with the story.

Disappointed. This was an entire waste of time. It’s literally just a retelling. What was even the point.

Forced and disappointing.. This is just a retelling of the first book from Cas’ point of view. I feel cheated out of the story and there is no sequel in sight. The only important new information is found in the last chapter which felt forced. The whole book felt forced.

Absolutely Amazing. I loved this book. I have wanted to know what Cas was thinking when he was falling for Poppy and I loved reading about it. I saw reviews stating they were disappointed that this was a retelling from Cas’ point of view, but the author has always made it clear that it would be just that before the book was ever released. I am so excited for the next books and to learn what will happen next.

Loved it. I love this series so much! I am so happy that she came out a book that is from Casteel’s point of view! Love it!🥰🥰🥰

Why !!. I absolutely love the blood an ash series it is one of my all time favorites !! I really had to push a bit only a bit though to keep reading the book as it is basically all the books but in Cas’s POV. The ending had me tragic like the cliffhanger ! I can’t wait for the next book and will e patiently impatient while waiting. I one hundred perfect recommend this series.

Not worth the read. Don’t get me wrong I love this series but it’s literally book one in Cas’s perspective and nothing new. If you buy it just read the first chapter and the last.

Disappointed. Honestly, I skipped through most of this book. There were only a couple of sentences of new information. If I wanted to read the first book again, I would have. This book was a waste of money and time. My reading time is valuable and it takes longer to read a book than to watch a movie. I think at this point, Jennifer has neglected her #1 series and is focusing too much on her new series (which is not as good). I fear she is going to destroy the ending of this series because she’s trying to do too much. Here’s to another long wait….

Filler book. This is book just book 1 from Cas’s POV. There was not enough new info given and it felt like it was rushed. Sad because I love this series and was so excited. Hopefully the next book will give me what I was hoping for.

Okay. It’s ok. A little disappointed given books 2,3,4 are SO good. This is just a retelling of book one from different POV with little new content.

Loved the book but still disappointed. I love this series and really liked this book - don't get me wrong, it was so interesting hearing though Casteel's POV. HOWEVER... I agree with others that this shouldn't have been a part of the main series and considered essential. The few chapters that actually added to the story could have been done in under 100 pages in the next book, with this entire POV done later in a spin off. I'll keep reading this series but this book was such a disappointment since I've waited for months for it to come out.

Amazing series. This series is absolutely amazing! However, I cannot believe how long I have to wait to find out if Poppy remembers everything.

Basically first book again. Lazy, awful writing. Absolutely no point to this book it does nothing to move the plot along, a retelling of the first book almost exactly, skipped bits because it felt copied and pasted from the first book. An utter failure and disappointment not sure I will even bother if she does write a final conclusion to this series.

Tell me what happens next please. This is not okay, I mean don’t get me wrong I loved the book and it’s worth reading if you’re interested in behind the scenes information, it was a great read but I wanna know what HAPPENS. A crown of guided bones left you on a cliff hanger and this book barely even gives you any new information before leaving you ON ANOTHER CLIFF HANGER. I’m gonna die from anticipation wondering what on earth is going to happen next

Terrible. Honestly this series started strong but has completely lost me at this point - the WHOLE book is back to the beginning from a view that was pretty clear at the time…I mean I’m 64% through and have zero new information I am essentially re-reading previous parts of the story and it’s so boring Terrible editing terrible writer SHOCKING book

Filler book. I love this series and was so excited for this book to come out but reading it I feel (and like most other people who’ve left reviews) that this is just a filler book to get money. I don’t want to read everything again that I basically already know and I feel like I’ve completely wasted my money. It’s made me change my views on the author a little as clearly with this, like with everything in life now, it’s driven by how much money you can get out of something. Disappointed.

I love it. I can’t wait for next one

Boring rubbish. Looked forward to this book for months but an utter waste of time. It is a filler meant to take my money. I am not interested in reliving the story AGAIN from someone else’s point of view - I want to know what happens next!! I just skipped to the last 2 pages of the book. Literally the only thing that is new in the story and a complete disappointment.

Brilliant. Brilliant book! Can’t wait for the next one

It’s the first book just a different POV. It’s the first book just from Cas’s POV. Gives only a few interesting insights. I am sure this books adds nothing to the story line that wouldn’t be summarized in the first chapter of the next book.

Disappointing. This is just a rehash of Book 1. Total disrespect of fans and readers to publish this just for profit. Don’t waste your money to fund this blatant rewrite.

3.5 not book 4. I think I brought this believing it was the next natural instalment in the story only to re-read book 1 with some Singular events at the beginning and end of the entire book. Although I don’t mind hearing the other opinion it wasn’t overly new information or many hidden twists. I’ll be looking forward to the next in series that will follow the original storyline

Severely disappointed. Not what I expected and not in a good way. I envisaged more poppy x cas x kieran. I eagerly welcomed the stasis because… cas x kieran finally! But no. Last chapter was the only that had me enthralled. The recount of events from cas was nice but it didn’t need to devour the whole book. And shockingly no kieran pov! After months of anticipating this book I am thoroughly dissatisfied.

Soul of Ash and Blood. Very disappointing I didn’t expect to be reading the first book again under the guise of a new book. Only got interesting in the last 30 pages.

What!. Oh, I wanted soooo much more from this book. I felt like it ended just as things finally started.

Amazing series. Oh my goodness, I couldn’t stop reading. Love love, love Poppy and Cas’s story. I cannot wait for the next in this series. Recommend to all.

A bandaid until the next “real” book. While it tides you over as a fix to keep reading about the characters, the new information could fit into 3 chapters. Mostly just reliving past events.

Loved. Hooked on this series. Can’t wait for the next book. The way this book went was such a nice touch seeing a new POV. So good.
