What a great book!. The Ballad sneaks up on you, twisting and revealing. Children lead this story, and they do act their ages, yet this is an adult novel. Not as in “adult” but in the sense that the story has layers, depths beyond a straight adventure. Hop on for the ride in an Air Car or a Dead Taxi. Meet a Nola you’ve only suspected might exist.
Magic. The story is saturated with imagination and some of the best storytelling I have ever read. The man knows how to create a world, or in this case, a city or or cities, or…?! More, pleeease!!!
Incredible. I couldn’t put it down. Trust me, you want to read this. A wonderfully fantastic tale of magic, death, bravery and the power of love.
Blerdy Cool. This book feels like the whimsy and imagination of Shel Silverstein mixed with the adventure of 80’s movies like Pippi Long-stocking or Goonies…. But with magical black folk in New Orleans. It’s also Jazz and hip hop culture, spirituality with nods to comics. It’s everything a Blerd like me needed. I need someone else to read it, so I can talk about it.
