Opowieść młodego chłopca, Żyda z Budapesztu, który spędził rok w niemieckich obozach koncentracyjnych, Oświęcimiu i Buchenwaldzie. Pozbawiona patosu relacja piętnastolatka, który z naiwnością stara się przystosować do wymagań swoich ciemiężycieli, odsłania mechanizmy kryjące się za zbrodniami ubiegłego stulecia. Powstało wiele ważnych literackich świadectw z obozów zagłady, jednak Los utracony jest na ich tle książką wyjątkową.
Imre Kertész (1929-2019). Laureat literackiej Nagrody Nobla 2002. W 1944 roku został wywieziony do obozu koncentracyjnego w Oświęcimiu, potem przeniesiony do Buchenwaldu. Wrócił do kraju, gdzie kilka lat po wojnie zaczął pisać w gazecie „Vilagossag”, ale zwolniono go z powodów politycznych. Od lat pięćdziesiątych zajmował się głównie tłumaczeniem (m.in. Freuda, Hoffmanstahla, Nietzschego, Canettiego, Wittgensteina) i pisaniem: Los utracony (1975; W.A.B. 2002, 2022), Fiasko (1988; W.A.B. 2003), Kadysz za nienarodzone dziecko (1990; W.A.B. 2003), Likwidacja (2003; W.A.B. 2003). Publikuje także opowiadania, m.in. Angielska flaga (2001; W.A.B. 2004), i książki eseistyczne, m.in. Język na wygnaniu (1998; W.A.B. 2004), Ja, inny. Kronika przemiany (1997; W.A.B. 2004) oraz Dziennik galernika (1992; W.A.B. 2006), która to książka w 2007 roku znalazła się w finale Literackiej Nagrody Europy Środkowej ANGELUS. Laureat wielu węgierskich i zagranicznych nagród.
