The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova Book Summary

The record-breaking phenomenon from Elizabeth Kostova is a celebrated masterpiece that "refashioned the vampire myth into a compelling contemporary novel, a late-night page-turner" (San Francisco Chronicle).

Breathtakingly suspenseful and beautifully written, The Historian is the story of a young woman plunged into a labyrinth where the secrets of her family’s past connect to an inconceivable evil: the dark fifteenth-century reign of Vlad the Impaler and a time-defying pact that may have kept his awful work alive through the ages. The search for the truth becomes an adventure of monumental proportions, taking us from monasteries and dusty libraries to the capitals of Eastern Europe—in a feat of storytelling so rich, so hypnotic, so exciting that it has enthralled readers around the world.

“Part thriller, part history, part romance...Kostova has a keen sense of storytelling and she has a marvelous tale to tell.” —Baltimore Sun

AMAZING. One of the best book ever. My dad suggested me this book and I'm immediately hooked. Totally worth ten bucks.

Protracted. Well written interesting story. Would have been a better read had some corollary scenes not been unnecessarily extended. Five to seven hundred pages would have sufficed.

Vernon Loved It!!!. This compelling narrative, told from the generational perspectives of a father and daughter, depicts the saga of diverse, yet committed, individuals who are brought together in an perilous journey to find Vlad Tepes III, also know as Dracula. Their journeys, involving three generations of historians, anthropologists and vampire hunters, are devoted to finding precious loved-ones. These journeys intersect in modern times with the finding of the tomb of Dracula, the living dead, still walking the earth after more than five hundred years. The intrigue that pieces together this complex puzzle is a tribute to the intelligence and tenacity of the group that is ultimately responsible for solving the mystery of Vlad Tepes III. The journey passes through multiple political and chronologically diverse cultures and locations; spanning a time frame from 1000 A.D. until present day, and encompassing medieval to present day technologies. A history lesson in its chronology, The Historian provides historical perspective and a fresh look at an ancient horror that has compelled many generations; the story of Dracula, its roots and continuation until today. Enjoy the journey!!!

Strangely a great read. Started off a bit slow, wasn’t sure was going to stay with it but very glad I did. The writing and the character development were outstanding. There were a few too many “coincidences” that drove the plot, but it was very satisfying, and the ending unexpeted but very fulfilling.

Great Read. Great read if your looking for history, horror and a non-serialized book.

The only book I have read more than once! Brilliant!. Amazingly Captivating!

Great Read!. This book was recommended to me in an airport bookstore. I had recently finished reading a Dan Brown novel and the clerk told me (correctly) that this novel was written in a similar style and was a great read. He could not have been more right! Very well written (less brain candy, more intellectual than Brown), the suspense builds as story lines merge and there were no lulls to drudge through. This book leaves you checking out the bookstore for more works from Elizabeth Kostova. Definitely a fan!

Such a great book.. I’ve just completed my 7th or 8th time through this luscious book. It, more than almost any other book I’ve read, has me searching for locations on google maps. Back and forth I go, marking places I must see and planning a trip. When I go, I will read The Historian whilst I travel.

The Historian. Kostova could teach Stoker a thing or two.

Good, but a little predictable.. It kept me entertained

Great characters and history. Loved this book characters places and suspense all in one. Great page turner.

Captivating. Loved this book! It is well written and hard to put down at times. Highly recommend.

Amazing. Absolutely Amazing

One of my very favorites. I've read this book four times, and have no doubt I shall read it many more. The prose is beautiful, and the interweaving between narrators--the letters of the professor, the heroine (who remains nameless throughout the book), and her father--is seamless and intriguing, leaving the reader to wonder, who is "The Historian" named in the title? It could be all three of these...or Dracula himself. This book is a masterpiece, and will become a classic in years to come.

The hHistorian. Interesting and fun read. A bit long but a great read.

My favorite author. This debut novel from kostova is great! She can really write a well crafted story at an unusual pace. I would suggest both of her books to anyone.

LOVE this book!!. What a wonderful surprise! Couldn't put it down. Desperately searching iTunes for similar :)

Fascinating, with a touch of creepy. While this novel is well written and eerie, it does tend to be wordy. The climax of the book falls flat compared to the beginning. Still, a fun and enjoyable read.

Reader123. The writing was no doubt great work, especially with all the detailed descriptions of the scenes and characters. However, all those details was also why the book became a drag and took too long to end. The plot started off very interesting and intriguing, but the ending turn out to be a great disappointment. It seemed as if the author realized the story was dragging on too long and just came up with some stupid way to end it.

Great read. This is really an engaging tale. Kostova writes with a lot of rich detail that make this a book that stays with you long after you finish it.
