Not perfect, but a satisfying story of art and artists. Art, and especially the process of making it, is not easy to write about. The Swan Thieves succeeds to a higher degree than many. The narrative, with the shifts between centuries, is overlong and sometimes a bit turgid, but the point of the story is carried well by a cast of characters that play their parts well.

Even better. I love kostova's work and this was even better than the historian. This one has made all through my office at work with rave reviews from everyone. I wish I had found her later in her career so I would have more of her work to read!

A bit dissapointing. After reading The Historian, I was expecting more of The Swan Thieves. It is a well written book, but it gives you too much useless information about the lives of some of its characters that does not help to advance the story or to solve the mystery. It's a good story, but should have been shorter.

The Swan Thieves - good but not great. I loved The Historian so I was very eager to read this book. But I was disappointed. It was far too slow in the first half and I nearly gave it up. However, my love of France, Paris and the French language kept me going. I found many of the main character's actions unrealistic. The female characters were very flat save Béatrice. Too bad the novel couldn't just have been about the painters.

The Swan Thieves stole my heart. I have read every book by this author;sadly this was my last one and perhaps for me the best because of the subject of painting is at the centre of the story . All of her books are so vividly written, the characters addicting, the stories captivating. I wish I had 4 more to plough through.
