The Lie by Chad Kultgen Book Summary

With the publication of The Average American Male -- and the release of the shocking viral videos that made it a water-cooler sensation -- Chad Kultgen became one of the most talked-about authors of recent years. Now, with The Lie, Kultgen returns with an even more salacious -- yet also more searching -- novel that reaches deeper into the craven inner workings of some of most depraved minds in America: college students.

His subjects are Brett, the rich hedonist whose appetite for sex is matched only by his contempt for women; his best friend, Kyle, the brooding science geek whose good intentions lead him to one disastrous decision; and Heather, the social-climbing sorority girl who has the power to destroy them both. As this devil's triangle plows through four years of college, Kultgen offers a astonishing take on the wild and amoral universe of college today: a frathouse world where sex is social currency, status means everything -- and winner takes all.

Abandon hope, all ye who enter here.

Fantastic read for the well rounded. A bit on the dark side of reality, but it read real nonetheless. Great character development and parallels to those characters throughout. I would recommend, but if you are easily offended or sensitive make sure you put on a helmet first.

best one yet. by far the best book i have ever read. i could not put it down! so many twists and turns and it was so interesting and hilarious! the ending had me i was so into it!

Yes… Chad did it twice in a row… You won't be disappointed. I loved the separation of character dialog in this story… It was so well thought out, the detail of individual thought pattern and true personality traits… Thank you, these books really need to be re-released in hardcover for longer shelf life of continual reading!

Don't read the last 30 or so pages. Trust me if you want the book to have a good ending trust me and don't read the end.

Favorite book!. Love love this book. Chad does not hold back and it's crazy how well thought out these characters are which makes the book that more believable and enjoyable. Being from Dallas, which is where the book is based, I cringe at the thought of how close this book is to reality. You won't be able to put it down!

The ending. It leaves you with a sense of "wow, the hope I have feels false" kinda sense. But hopefully the ending makes you go outside and start a fire in your backyard and burn the book to a type of grey ash so that no one may feel that hollow feeling that I felt when I closed the book.

A Good Read. I read The Average American Male and decided to go right to this one. This is definitely a deeper read than the previous book and has much better character development and a more developed plot. I was somewhat ready for it to be over maybe 75 pages earlier than it was, but I did enjoy it. Also, while each characters' day to day escapades remain completely far-fetched (like the previous book), there is something about the underlying themes that characterize each one that is completely realistic. Knowing that Kultgen is a relatively new author, I think his work will continue to get more and more interesting and more and more thought-provoking, and I will continue to read hIm.

Don't waste your time. This book is crude, vulgar, and pointless. I thought it was really depressing too. I had read the author's first book and found it entertaining but I didn't get anything out of this one. I actually felt bad after I finished it, like I wanted to read something happy to erase how it made me feel. Don't waste your time.

Why the ending?. -apart of me wants to accept the fact that no book has a perfect ending. Everyone got screwed.... But worst of all the main character got screwed the most... Great read, enjoyable and makes you want to send your kids to community college.

Wonderful. Read this book my sophomore year and read average American male my senior. Chad kultgen is a great writer. Unique. I like his style.

Great Story. I have read a lot of the reviews about the ending , to be honest it was very honest to real life . Great story and very hateable and likeable characters

My Favorite Book Ever. Kultgen is a gifted writer, but I could understand where people wouldn't understand him and dislike the vulgarity. Average American Male and Men, Women and Children were good reads, but don't hold a candle to The Lie. You can literally sit through the entire 400 page book and never put it down. The three characters are addictive and reading each of their perspectives in a chronological order, makes the book. The ending, is utterly creative, horrid and absolutely terrific. Everything seamlessly fit together, it was terrific. Last but something to point out to those from out of Texas, a very accurate depiction of a surprising amount of Texas women...especially those you find in Dallas.

Ok ... So, um yeah. Vulgar, hopeless, and incredible! I rPicked thus bad boy up after reading the average American male and seriously like couldn't put it down. It has everything I needed for a cheap way to entertain myself. When you read be prepared to spend some time as you too will not be able to put it once once you've been acquainted to the 3 characters the story revolves around.

Very Brett Easton Ellis like. Well this was an interesting read. First, I would say that I found the book very enjoyable if not a little too vulgar. I find the book very similar in style and content to Brett Easton Ellis' "Rules of Attraction." I am sure this is a comparison this book gets often. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Ellis' books. [SPOILER] As a disclaimer this book may not be suitable for everyone: it touches upon topics such as date rape, drug use, abortion, fake rape allegations amongst others. As a gay male who went to art school, I can't attest the authenticity of the three main characters' attitudes about sex. In my opinion it seems a little gratuitous, but like I said I don't know any people in a fraternity or sorority so this may very well be accurate. I would say that I do find the characters emotionally believable. They are a little flat, but I think that is done intentionally to get at the crux of the story. I feel like the core of the story boils down to the misery of someone moving from youth (where you are free and full of hope) into the boring reality of adulthood. These three characters had a dream of what their life would be like after college and made all decisions based on these false ideas only to end up unhappy in the reality of life. Or the book might also just be about how stupid American college students are.
