I enjoyed this series. But I enjoy mr mckiernans style of writing. This is not epic fantasy by any means but it is a sweet story with likable characters and an easy to follow plot line (as opposed to six plot lines)

Sweet to the point of cloying.. The world is unique. That's about the only good thing in this series. The author uses French as the world's "Old Tongue" which would be ok except the French language has the unfortunate effect of sounding pretentious. At the same time none of the named protagonists is ever in any serious danger. Literally half of the main characters spend half the book out of the action sitting on their butts. The plot is rushed. It takes three chapters to train villagers into an army. Five or six chapters to have that army butchered. The book managed to be both trite and pretentious at the same time, all while bring so sweet as to induce gagging.
