Martin Luther King, Jr. by Marshall Frady Book Summary

"a quick introduction to the life of a great American" -- The New York Times

An inspiring portrait of the incredible life and lasting influence of Dr. Martin Luther King

Marshall Frady, the reporter who became the unofficial chronicler of the civil rights movement, here re-creates the life and turbulent times of its inspirational leader. Deftly interweaving the story of King’s quest with a history of the African American struggle for equality, Frady offers fascinating insights into his subject’s magnetic character, with its mixture of piety and ambition. He explores the complexities of King’s relationships with other civil rights leaders, the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, and the FBI’s J. Edgar Hoover, who conducted a relentless vendetta against him. The result is a biography that conveys not just the facts of King’s life but the power of his legacy.

Poorly Written. This book is very poorly written. It is as if someone is trying to write as an academic or scholar but is clearly not capable of doing so. Words are thrown around seemingly to have “big” words and show off a vocabulary that the author clearly does not possess. It hurts my head to read this book. It is so bad that in some places I have no clue what the author is trying to say. Don’t buy this book.

A Good Bio on Martin Luther King, Jr.. A good biography of King. I wanted to read about his accomplishments, and learn about the America he was born into, and how he changed it. The book succeeds in that aspect. It does a good job in giving you a sense of his humanity, not shying away from his fears, weaknesses, and the toll his work took on him. I didn’t think the vocabulary needed to be so high brow, it made the book more dense than it needed to be. Overall, if you’re looking for a biography on Martin Luther King, Jr. this is a good candidate
