Black Power by Richard Wright Book Summary

Three extraordinary and impassioned nonfiction works by Richard Wright, one of America's premier literary giants of the twentieth century, together in one volume, with an introduction by Cornel West.

“The time is ripe to return to [Wright’s] vision and voice in the face of our contemporary catastrophes and hearken to his relentless commitment to freedom and justice for all.” — Cornel West (from the Introduction)

Black Power: A Record of Reactions in a Land of Pathos is Richard Wright’s chronicle of his trip to Africa’s Gold Coast before it became the free nation of Ghana. It speaks eloquently of empowerment and possibility, freedom and hope, and resonates loudly to this day.

The Color Curtain: A Report on the Bandung Conference is a vital piece arguing for the removal of the color barrier and remains one of the key commentaries on the question of race in the modern era. “Truth-telling will perhaps always be unpopular and suspect, but in The Color Curtain . . . Wright did not hesitate to tell the truth as he saw it” (Amritjit Singh, Ohio University).

White Man, Listen! is a stirring assortment of Wright’s essays on race, politics, and other social concerns close to his heart. It remains a work that “deserves to be read with utmost seriousness, for the attitude it expresses has an intrinsic importance in our times” (New York Times).

Racist. and hypocritical. Typical propaganda and double standard. I guess only white folks can be racist. Pffft!

White power. It is white power blacks do not have as much control so they can't say black power don't even sound right

shut up people. black or white ur the same

Hmmmm. I don't see books called white power.

Shameful. If your not going to read the book at least read the overview. These essays were written during the time when black people were still being oppressed by the laws and functionalities of society. I enjoyed this book, a lot of it can be carried over to today and not just for black people but all people of color. Richard Wright is one of the most compelling writers of our time. He makes you think and question while his writing when taken seriously promotes discussion and understanding.

Not sure how to break this to you. This space is supposed to be for reviews of the book (from people who have actually read the book), not a comments thread. The idea is to help the author sell more books (assuming you like the book) not make comments that make it clear you've never even opened the book.

White pride. I'd love to see someone write book "white power" or start the white person collage fund. All the darkies would go crazy:)

White power. So they make a book called black power what about white power make a book like that

Please read. Considering how clear it is that no one who has posted a review even knows who the author is, these reviews are all bogus. Richard Wright was one of the 20th century's preeminent and most celebrated authors, the fact that people think this is a recently written book says they have no knowledge of literature to even make a comment, much less have it taken seriously. How many of you have read a book by someone other than Nicholas Sparks or Danielle Steele? The title references the necessity of Blacks during the civil rights movement era to take charge of their one destinies in the US as Africans had done in Ghana. It was written at a time of segregation and before a Black president. The author has been dead for 50 years.

What you already know. White people known what blacks are capable of. One of the reasons they try to keep us down is because we have so much power and they know it. Whites go look up ancient Egypt.... We accomplished more positive things than you ever will. The revolution will not be televised Black Power!!!!!

Full of Hate &. Racism

Racist clap trap. Racist book...proving ignorance comes in any color in the past, present and future, in any media. 1 star is too much. As Maddox would say, "F"!

Black Power review. This is a good back shows what ppl back then went through. Blk and White ppl can learn from it. And to the other ppl with the white power stuff chill u haven't read it. I'm white and sum we invited was but goggle everyday inventions. Black ppl invented the comb a/c for petes sake he'll washer and dryer blk and white both are good inventors. We just happen to take other ppl stuff and patent first lol.

DON'T JUDGE A BOOK BY IT'S COVER?!?. This is not a new book, people!!!!! This book was written in the 50's and it is a significant part of American history. PLEASE ONLY REVIEW BOOKS YOU HAVE ACTUALLY READ AND QUIT SHARING YOUR IGNORANCE WITH THE REST OF US. These reviews are useless.

White power, lol. Please, the world relies so much on africa's natural resources because Africa is truly the richest continent on the planet. I guess the white man is too ignorant to realize that and their paper money really has no value and it was there diseases from Europe that helped them kill and take over land. I'll give them this, they are the masters of deception and the lie.

White Power. Would be a good idea for someone to write a book on white power : invention of cars, plains, electricity, telephone and everything you see around you..let's celebrate what the white race had provided society so far...as well as how it literally still feed the African continent on a daily basis preventing Africans from starvation...black power? Power of what??

Racism... Allowed.. Terrible. Absolute tragedy.

Racist. I thought only whites could be racist. Black power? Really? Really? I'd give zero stars if that were am option. Why are we rehashing this crap? It's done, it's over we have a black president guys!

Oh brother. I'm glad to see books Luke this available but black people aren't the only ones oppressed nowadays. Society altogether is galling apart and every race has their faults so instead if pointing out who did what and trying to come out with a new book that isn't even necessary, can we please agree that the world is ours together or agree to disagree and go our separate ways.

Wow.. If anyone ever wrote a book called "White Power" there would be widespread outrage. The media would go nuts, claiming that it's racist and whatnot. So why is it ok for a "Black Power" book? Sure they went through hellacious times back then, but not anymore. Personally, I think learning about slavery is beneficial so we don't repeat the past, but titles and things like this are grossly inappropriate.
