Unsettling by David Thomas Book Summary
Description I have done many things in my life, some of which I am proud, most of which I am not. If the medical profession is to be believed, the reason for my behaviour is manic depression, or if you are from the world of film and television, bipolar disorder. I have been treated for it many times, but only half-heartedly, on my part, because I never really believed in it. Only recently have I begun to accept that there might be some truth in it. This book is not about mental illness itself, it is partly an attempt to understand my behaviour and partly to apologise for it. Is bipolar disorder the reason for all of the foolish things that I have done? Is it responsible for the alcohol and substance abuse, the string of disastrous relationships, the deliberate distancing from family and friends and the inability to remain in one place or one job for very long? Or is it that there is no illness at all? Perhaps it is simply that I am a fool who cannot hold a job and enjoys moving house. I have to know the truth. This book is about the journey to discover that truth. About the Author David Thomas was born in a poor area of Liverpool in 1952. Losing his father at a young age and being unable to cope with his family life it is easy to understand why his childhood and early education were not what most of us would describe as ideal. Consequently, it is hardly surprising he has written a book of this nature. His entire life has been spent on the move with countless addresses and careers. Only recently has he been able to ‘settle’ for long enough to look back over his life. His book, ‘Unsettling’ is what he discovered. He currently lives in East Sussex, however, if this book is any guide, not for much longer.
