The Wolf Gift by Anne Rice Book Summary

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • “Vintage Anne Rice—a lushly written, gothic … metaphysical tale. This time, with werewolves.” —The Wall Street Journal

When Reuben Golding, a young reporter on assignment, arrives at a secluded mansion on a bluff high above the Pacific, it’s at the behest of the home’s enigmatic female owner. She quickly seduces him, but their idyllic night is shattered by violence when the man is inexplicably attacked—bitten—by a beast he cannot see in the rural darkness. It will set in motion a terrifying yet seductive transformation that will propel Reuben into a mysterious new world and raise profound questions. Why has he been given the wolf gift? What is its true nature—good or evil? And are there others out there like him?

Rs. Loved it, great book and looking forward to the second of this series

Enjoyable. This book gave a different view of a legend. I really enjoyed every page and fell in live with each character!

The Wolf Gift. I've read half the book and ready to call it done. Sorry I wanted this to engross me like the her vampires and witches of past. It started out very Anne Rice but half way in it feels wrong and the writing style shifted. Rushed as if she's not sure if she can sustain the thrills for the "wolf man" and why is he so lonely rushing into a relationship when it's only been a couple days since his transformation? Truly I am now trying to decided if this is worth my time to finish it. I'm also wondering how everyone could be so in love with it.

Great book!. As always with Anne rice, this was a great book! I do hope there will be a follow up to this!

Solid story. Although it lacks the sophistication of her earlier Vampire Chronicles, this is an engaging and solid story. I am hoping that she continues to flesh out this world in more novels.

Anne Rice is back!. Absolutely wonderful beginning to what I hope will be yet another series of stories blending philosophy, tragedy and a heartfelt and spellbinding love of language. Bravo!

Never Dissapoints!. Anne Rice is back into her marvelous style of storytelling - well worth the read!

This is not your new Vampire Chronicles. If you are a dedicated AR fan, then perhaps this book will hold some appeal to you. If you are the kind who thought her best works were those in the vampire and Mayfair witches series, then this book will be a complete letdown. I personally believe her publisher promulgated this drivel only because she has a following. If a new writer were to have written The Wolf Gift, then s/he would still be searching for a publishing house. There's no plot, the characters are not well developed -and not likable. There's no character that is worth rooting for: everyone is uber wealthy (who in this economic climate wants to read a novel about the auspicious turn of events in the life of a trust fund baby?) and the few trials the protagonist undertakes are surmounted with ease and a Dickensonian happy ending. The good vs evil theme is forcibly inculcated into the material and is cliche. The science and technology Anne Rice adds into her story still doesn't give the tale a "modern" edge. Her main character's name is Reuben Golding, a title that conjures up 70 year-old accountants or your great aunt Ethel's hard of hearing husband; not some hot 23 year-old boy who drives a Porsche and shags three of the female characters in the book. Clearly AR is out of touch with the times, and her readers. Do yourself a service and save your time and money.

The Wolf Gift. The book was a slow starter. Midway through it became interesting and by the end you wanted the story of Margon to continue. I downloaded the next book right away.

Wonderful Unique Take on Werewolf Lore. This book, like so many other Anne Rice novels, really draws you into the plot and the richly drawn characters. Very interesting twist on the usual werewolf mythology. Hoping for a second novel, this feels like a great introduction to many more adventures.

Amazing!!. It's been a while since I have read a book that was not a text book or scientific journal article. This book was enthralling and hard to put down. Renewed my love of fiction!!! Can't wait to read more. The author does an amazing job spinning imagery through text.

The wolf gift. The book started off interesting but toward the end it turned into a philosophical debate and then it abruptly ends with no closure on what happens to the main characters. I have to say it was disappointing considering the price of the book and the amount of time I devoted to reading it.

Good read. So far a good read, not bad for her first time with werewolf lore.

The Wolf Gift. Engrossing

The Wolf Gift.. A remarkable story. You must read the two books to get the full impact. Delightful, hard to put down.

Watered down Rice. I was so excited to see a new novel by one of my all-time favorite authors, Anne Rice. Sadly, this is not the Rice I know and love. It wasn't a total disappointment or waste of time, I read it in just a couple days. The story was mild and predictable, so were the characters. Weighing in at just a few hundred pages, The Wolf Gift lacked the history and complexity and renaissance of novels such as The Witching Hour or the conflict and lure of Memnoch. I longed for more from the characters and for at least one exciting twist and turn. Oh well. I downloaded the Witching Hour since it's been 20 years since I read it. Now that's vintage Rice.

The wolf gift. Very good

No Gift Here. Been a huge Anne Rice fan for 20 years, but not a huge fan of this book. Felt like I was reading a cheap paperback I would buy for a plane ride. Character development was weak. So much potential to tell a story like Witching Hour, but it fell flat. And by the way, if you are going to make me pay good dollars for an Ebook, can you at least get rid of typos?

Yes!. Brings back fond memories of why the vampire chronicles were so compelling. Looking forward to more.

Drivel. Used to be a huge Anne Rice fan, but this was hard to slog through and read like sophmoric self-analysis with an unnecessary number of sentences about slurping blood and intestines. I finished it, but only because I felt like I had to.

Wolf gift. interesting take on man wolf lore. Beautiful prose we have come to associate with Rice. Waxes a little long on the philosophy.

The Wolf Gift. I have enjoyed everything A Rice has ever done. This was a true pleasure. I rarely read a piece in one day. On a rainy day on Shelter Island in New York I did just that and what a pleasure. More please. Jim O

It's been to long. Way to long to wait for a new Anne Rice book this is wonderful an absolute joy. I hope there are more to come

The Wolf Gift. Amazing!!!!!!!

The Wolf Gift was a gift!. What a wonderful story, told in a way only Anne Rice could tell. Wonderful new characters as intensely beautiful as those in the Vampire Chronicles exude only excitement for the sequel. Anne, your genius continues to inspire.

Great Book. A deep thoughtful look into the moral dilemma of a man's consciousness and an animal's needs, but in a way that is neither obvious or simple. All written in her beautiful prose with a fascinating story with twists and turns. If you are looking for a scary, bloody fast comic-book-type read, this is not for you. If you want to. Insider your own assumptions and values, go for it and just try to put it down.

Grandiose. A fantastic read. With Anne rices cosmic questioning, she has done a superb job.

The Wolf Gift. Loved this novel, just as I have loved Anne Rice's other wonderful novels. I love all the research she puts into her books. I also love all the spirituality of the characters. I sincerely hope that Ms. Rice is writing a trilogy on this matter. I need to see what happens next to all the morphenkind. I am definitely hooked!

Game changer. Just like the vampire series Anne Rice changed the game on werewolves. Beautiful and amazing creatures. Great book.

Wolf Gift. Once again I am left devastated and begging for more with this latest offering by Anne Rice. Somehow I feel like I am leaving a beloved family of which I feel part of and homesick for a return to them. The exquisite storytelling and weaving of the supernatural and lightly touched upon backstory leaves me with interest piqued (to put it mildly) and left wondering when the next installment will appear! Please please get to your desk Anne Rice and continue on with this story which has left me hanging and begging for more!!! Wonderful read and die-hard fans will not be disappointed!!!!

GREAT. As always the characters felt real and alive and very believable. I could barely put it down. Ann Rice has a Way of telling a story that captivates from the very beginning.

The wolf gift. Have read Ann rice in the past, loved the vampire series but became increasingly discouraged with her later works. This is the first book that I have read of her in quite awhile that I believe measures up to past experiences. Look forward to perhaps a series from this.

Wolf. An excellent read.

Boring. Lacking any sort of a climax or real excitement.

The Wolf Gift. This was another truly stunning and spectacularly written novel, proving once again that no one writes like Anne Rice. Thank you I can actually visualize this book in movie form.

More, please!. And step on it! I thoroughly enjoyed The Wolf Gift, had to read it again as I missed Reuben! The simplicity and complexity was like a rare Holiday meal. Looking forward to the series (I pray), our new Heroes/Heroine, questions and answers of the mystical and spiritual. Well done A.R.! Can you give us a hint or two of what's next? J.B.

Amazing. Anne's stories are powerful and visceral. They pull you in, tie you up and take you along for the ride. Amazing! I eagerly await the next book!

Really great!. I was not a fan of vampire chronicles, a little too dark. But loved the angel series and I really liked this as well. It was thought provoking and I loved the old wolves and their stories.

Octopus. It was too long. Well written. Intriguing . Excellent character development. Very good story. Exhausting.

Great book!. I loved the Wolf Gift! I hope there are more to come with these wonderful characters!

Can't wait for the sequel. A new series is born to match The Vampire and The Witches chronicles! Bravo Ms. Rice.

Fantastic. As usual, Anne Rice is amazing in her writing. A brilliant story, told by a truly incredible storyteller! She always leaves me begging for more.

The Wolf Gift. Wonderful summer read!

Great book.. Excellent. Reuben is a very likable character, the story mystical, and the cast enthralling. Highly recommend.

Wanted to love it, but.... Enjoyed the vampire chronicles, and parts of this book I did really enjoy. But, there are some very slow bits and many times I found myself skimming the pages looking for the plot to advance. Characters are a bit fanciful.

Amazing. Anne Rice never disappoints! I couldn't put it down!

Captivating!. I could not put it down. This is classic Anne Rice doing what she does best!

Good but not Great. This book starts out fast and grabs your attention quick. A unique twist on the werewolf legend. However, the author really let me down. After an exciting climax, the book spends the last few chapters stuck in a boring explanation mode and even introduces new characters. I would have had the climax closer to the end, leaving my reader wanting more. Instead the reader is left meandering through the last few chapters just trying to get through the book. Still, it is definitely worth a read.

Wow! Exquisite!!. Oh, to walk yet another wondrous journey with Anne Rice again. 'The Wolf Gift', is a readers gift as well. I look forward to an extended journey into Miss Rice's new werewolf world. Magnificent!! Thank you! - Sol Sims

The Wolf Gift. Anne Rice does it again. I love her writing. She always keeps you coming back with her weird characters and her sexy prose. A welcome change from the typical stories I have been reading. I'm hoping for a sequel...want to see how Reuben & Laura continue their love affair. I predict a female Morphenkinder. Keep writing Anne - you are one-of-a-kind. Long time reader. I have read The Witching Hour 3 times - recommend it to all.
