Smuk og smertefuld ungdomsroman om kærlighed og ensomhed.
Hannah Baker har begået selvmord, bare 16 år gammel.
Clay Jensen kommer hjem fra skolen, og finder en pakke på dørtrinnet. I pakken ligger en bunke kassettebånd. På båndene har Hannah indtalt sin historie. 13 personer har medvirket til, at hun ikke følte, der var anden udvej, end at tage sit liv.
Clay vil først ikke have noget med båndene at gøre. Han var forelsket i Hannah, og er vred og frustreret over, hvad hun har gjort. Men han indfanges af hendes stemme, og finder til sin gru ud af, at han er én af de 13 personer.
Gennem en hel aften og nat lytter han til Hannahs stemme, mens han følger hendes spor rundt gennem byen.
Og heldigvis er der et lys i mørket!
