The Long Earth Book Reviews
The Long Earth by Terry Pratchett & Stephen Baxter Book Summary
The possibilities are endless. (Just be careful what you wish for. . . .)
1916: The Western Front. Private Percy Blakeney wakes up. He is lying on fresh spring grass. He can hear birdsong and the wind in the leaves. Where have the mud, blood, and blasted landscape of no-man's-land gone? For that matter, where has Percy gone?
2015: Madison, Wisconsin. Police officer Monica Jansson is exploring the burned-out home of a reclusive—some say mad, others allege dangerous—scientist who seems to have vanished. Sifting through the wreckage, Jansson find a curious gadget: a box containing some rudimentary wiring, a three-way switch, and . . . a potato. It is the prototype of an invention that will change the way humankind views the world forever.
The first novel in an exciting new collaboration between Discworld creator Terry Pratchett and the acclaimed SF writer Stephen Baxter, The Long Earth transports readers to the ends of the earth—and far beyond. All it takes is a single step. . . .

An Exploration of New Frontiers for Earthlings. I would recommend this highly imaginative book. The inhabitants of this fictional earth have discovered how to “step” into alternative versions of the earth. The possibilities seem almost limitless when traveling from world to world on the “long earth.” The author introduces us to a plethora of new creatures, including elves and hybrids of various animals. The logistics seem plausible for the most part as we join stepping pioneers and a computerized being on their journey through thousands of worlds. The author touches on the theme of American expansionism, opening up new frontiers right here on earth.
The long earth. Very imaginative and quite the journey, but ......didn't l eave me with my usual science fiction glow when I finished. Buy this in a couple of years when it is cheaper, there are better stories out there.
Ejoyable but not perfect. The Long Earth is at times entertaining, but lacks a certain narrative cohesion to be truly great. The main element in the book - transporting or "stepping" into alternative earths - I found a bit silly, although eventually it won me over. The main story is interrupted by several B stories, most of which aren't really developed. I get this is the first book in a series and all, but I'd liked to have seen the subplots more fully developed or put aside altogether with the main story be focused on. Overall, it was a decent book, but I'm not sure if I will read the other books in the series.
Fantastic. I didn't want to put it down, this book truly transports you into another world. You won't regret it, buy this book!
Intriguing. In the tradition of Arthur C Clarke, this novel makes you reconsider what it means to be human. Long Earth also examines how our relationship with Earth is woven into our humanity. Imaginative and very well written, I just wish it didn't end so abruptly.
Interesting, but.... Should be classified as young adult science fiction.
End Came Too Quick. I think that all the nuances of stepping could have been fleshed out much more. Otherwise this is a great book to read while traveling.
Brilliant. Makes you want a west or east 1 earth where another terry pratchett evolved to make a sequel! I have read everything he has written and this is one of the best!
Couldn't finish. I've read everything else Pratchett has ever published, and almost every significant science fiction book from the last 30 years, but I couldn't slog through this one. Interesting idea, but very little plot that goes nowhere in the first 3rd of the book.
