Holly by Stephen King Book Summary

#1 New York Times Bestseller * New York Times Notable Book * NPR Best Book of the Year

Holly Gibney, one of Stephen King’s most compelling and resourceful characters, returns in this chilling novel to solve the gruesome truth behind multiple disappearances in a midwestern town.

“Sometimes the universe throws you a rope.” —BILL HODGES

Stephen King’s Holly marks the triumphant return of beloved King character Holly Gibney. Readers have witnessed Holly’s gradual transformation from a shy (but also brave and ethical) recluse in Mr. Mercedes to Bill Hodges’s partner in Finders Keepers to a full-fledged, smart, and occasionally tough private detective in The Outsider. In King’s new novel, Holly is on her own, and up against a pair of unimaginably depraved and brilliantly disguised adversaries.

When Penny Dahl calls the Finders Keepers detective agency hoping for help locating her missing daughter, Holly is reluctant to accept the case. Her partner, Pete, has Covid. Her (very complicated) mother has just died. And Holly is meant to be on leave. But something in Penny Dahl’s desperate voice makes it impossible for Holly to turn her down.

Mere blocks from where Bonnie Dahl disappeared live Professors Rodney and Emily Harris. They are the picture of bourgeois respectability: married octogenarians, devoted to each other, and semi-retired lifelong academics. But they are harboring an unholy secret in the basement of their well-kept, book-lined home, one that may be related to Bonnie’s disappearance. And it will prove nearly impossible to discover what they are up to: they are savvy, they are patient, and they are ruthless.

Holly must summon all her formidable talents to outthink and outmaneuver the shockingly twisted professors in this chilling new masterwork from Stephen King.

“I could never let Holly Gibney go. She was supposed to be a walk-on character in Mr. Mercedes and she just kind of stole the book and stole my heart. Holly is all her.” —STEPHEN KING

The gore is not the true horror in this story…. Sure, there’s gore to delight horror fans, but the psychological thrill is the one that’s most chilling because it leaps from beyond the realm of fantasy into our current times. King’s writing is smooth as butter, an easy and fast read and very fun, I was sad to leave these characters by the end. Not sure his writing of Black characters is very rich, but it’s respectful.

Always!!. Always the best. I have laid “in bed” with Stephen King since I was 16. I am now 63! I love Holly and all her quirks. The ranting by others about the anti vaxxers and anti Trump in the story means they feel they are wrong and can’t help themselves at still hanging on to falsehoods. I for one felt it was spot on about the times we are living in. I can’t wait for the next Holly Hope to be written. Thanks for keeping me up and company at night Mr. King!!

Omg King lost it during Covid. Wow, less politics, more Holly. What should have been a great read because Holly is a wonderful character turns out to be a Trump hating, fear mongering, vaccinated, double and triple boosted ode to the covid era which most want to put behind. King, you and Howard Stern should get together and Trump bash and wax on and on about vaccines and basically never leave your homes for fear of catching covid.

A rare dud from the “King”.. This one does not live up to the high standards of most King novels. I agree with his politics but just not a good book and I’ve read almost everything he’s written.

Love me some Stephen King!. Bravo Stephen another amazing book - couldn’t put it down till I was done and sad to see the end coming…. Love this book along with all his other books. And for all the haters out there who hide behind the Trump fact that he propagated this rampant spread of COVID by denying the virus and the vaccine…Trump himself got vaccinated while he let the rest of his followers to die of the virus.

Holly - I thought King was better than this. I’ve been enjoying Mr. King’s novels and short stories for 40 years. Holly will be my last read of his work. Two reasons - 1: When the first chapter is more political opinion than plot development, it’s impossible to settle in for a good story. Why would you alienate 50 percent of your readers 10 minutes into the book? 2: The opening caged victim conundrum seemed remarkably similar to one in The Stand. I guess even all world authors are quietly quitting these days.

Politic Slop. Wow. If you were unsure what politics the author clings to, wonder no more. Just read this predictable steaming pile and be enlightened!

Amazing. Kept me on turning the pages!

Holly is back!. My favorite character is back on the case! Holly is back on a new case with Finders Keepers. It was a wild and enjoyable ride. As usual Stephen King never disappoints. I enjoyed every words. The narratives of both Holly and the antagonists kept me on the edge of my seat. I am ready for even more from Holly. Love having a strong, intelligent, and neurodivergent female lead.

ENOUGH OF THE TRUMP BASHING!!!. WE GET IT, YOU HATE TRUMP! I WILL NEVER READ ANOTHER KING NOVEL AS LONG AS I LIVE AND BREATHE!!

More story. Less politics. I love Stephen books for mystery and story telling. Not politics.

Agree with the political views but hated the book.. King’s writing is so sophomoric. It makes me gag.

Lacks technical research.. “Holly” was a pretty good story as Stephen King’s books usual are however, the amount of technical errors made about guns and medicine were appalling.

Holly. Thank you Stephen King.

This book is, as you’d expect, very well written.. Activities of the period, especially Covid, were used well to be obstacles in the plot. But, having read some people’s reviews it’s clear that these people ‘trigger’ like rabid dogs. Clearly this book was 400 pages longer than they’re used to reading.

King Has Gone Political. This book is just terrible… I used to love reading King’s stories, but recently, most of his books are nothing more than shallowly disguised political commentary. 37 pages into this one and he is berating President Trump, and celebrating Joe Biden… I won’t finish this book or listen to King’s drivel. He made $14.99 off of me, but lesson learned. There will be no more.

Please buy something else!. Save your money; this book is so badly written that I want my money refunded! Very politically written from the very far left perspective. Will not be purchasing another from King.

Thrilling!. Could not put this book down. Holly is both relatable and formidable. Hope that this is only one among many books to follow where she is the central character.

Good read. Gripping

Sadly, totally political. I love Stephen King’s writing. Great, well written stories abound. Unfortunately, Holly is a not so hidden political commentary. I wish Mr. King would allow me to fall into his world to escape this one. There are a multitude of political commentators on all sides so knowing his political mind doesn’t add any meaningful difference. Please, Mr King, just let me escape.

Kept me awake. This was a crazy story. Updated version of Hansel & Gretal. I thought I was immune to horror stories, nope, I thought wrong. It definitely stayed with me. And to all the naysayer’s complaining about the book being political, no it wasn’t. He wrote this book during a pandemic. It was medical not political. If you thought it was political - check yourself. People were dying in large quantities. We had not seen a virus like this in nearly 100 years. And when someone reads it 20, 25, 50 years or more from now they will understand the truth then too.

Too political. I love Holly as a character. I reread all the books with Holly in them in anticipation of this release. Unfortunately, Ted Nugent, James Woods, Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick and a plethora of other names, Stephen King has joined the ranks of those who believe we want to know about their politics. Don’t get me wrong, King is still a compelling author, and this book brought me to tears several times. However, it could have been less politically charged and still had the same narrative. I’m kind of surprised his editors didn’t try to point that out to him. I’m only 6 years younger than King and have read everything he has written, even as Bachman, however I will think twice before reading anything else he writes. I don’t want to mix politics and entertainment.

Couldn’t finish…. Be warned, fellow Readers, if your politics aren’t aligned with the far left it may be difficult to finish this one. I was so looking forward to reading Holly. This book just wasn’t the escape from this crazy world that I was looking for.

Lib Lit. Could’ve been a good novel without all the political rhetoric. Felt like I was reading a novel written by MSNBC or CNN. Save your money.

He’s Back!. I, for one, didn’t care for Mr. King’s last novel about an underground fairy tale kingdom. I am a rabid fan and have read nearly everything the author has written. There is no better story teller than Stephen King and he feels to me like a kindred spirit. “Holly” is another home run. I couldn’t put it down and now that I’ve finished, I miss it. Is there a better compliment than that?

I want my money back. I don’t think SK wrote this. Ghost writer? Terrible terrible writing. So politically motivated that you can’t get into the story. Just awful

Awful. Like watching the view . I read first two pages and put it down. I would love to be refunded for this political crap. He’s losing readers and we are sick of him

Not a fan of the “ new” King.. I long for the days when King turned out scary-as-Hades page turners, like Salem’s Lot , It, and Pet Semetary. I LOVED The Outsiders and especially, Holly. I’m neither Dem. or Rep., and as a retired RN, I agreed with the Covid measures. I still wear a mask, but that doesn’t mean I want to pay to hear political diatribes from my once Go- To guy for scary stuff. Over the years, King’s has changed…for the worse. If I want this kind of rhetoric, I’ll turn on MSNBC. No thanks, Buh-Bye!

Rad book, love hollyberry. Great series, love the SK detective side.

Disappointed.. Listen, I don't even like Trump. But I read these books as a form of escapism, and I do not appreciate the author's whiney political rants being shoved down my throat. Stephen King is an incredible author and has been my favorite ever since I was definitely way too young to be reading his books; but I do not think I will be purchasing another for quite a while after sitting through the moral lecture that I just endured via this book.

Still the Best. As always.

MAGA Snowflakes think King is now WOKE!. Apparently MAGA is offended by Kings latest masterpiece which makes me smile and more glad I purchased it.

Holly Gibney. Stephen King never fails to entertain. All the stars for him.

I was really looking forward. to this book, even bought it in advance. But Kings liberal left wing political rants, esp regarding Trump spoils it for me. Why can’t he just write a book, we all know his political views.

Glock vs Revolver. A Glock does not have a safety. A revolver usually does. He got it wrong. Still a great read!

Not Happy. I’ve been a Stephen King most of my life; my favorite author. I’ve read all his books and the some more than once. The Dark Tower series is my all time favorite, I even cried at points of it. But this book changed things for me, he brought politics into it. Why? I just wanted a good story. We already have enough division in day to day life. So I didn’t make far when it started so I just stopped. I wish he would of just not gone there.

Holly. I have to disagree with the readers who are upset with Mr King’s inclusion of Covid and political points of view. I don’t feel that he was soapboxing. I think he was merely adding information to the story to make it cohesive. And I myself am an anti-vaxer. I think that these disgruntled readers are just another example of the intolerance that has so damaged our societies. Good story, good read tho!

Holly. I usually like Stephen King but this one was rather dull. It was also very political which no one wants to read about since it’s everywhere now. I read books for enjoyment and the political stuff is a turn off.

2nd book I will not finish, sad…. I agree with others who want to read fiction and not political theater. Yes, COVID was horrible on all levels, but I certainly do not want to keep living it over and over again. In particular with a fictional book. Another author, Brad Thor, did the same with his latest book. I made it three chapters in when I stopped. Here with Holly, after one chapter, I must decline to continue the political hysteria.

Excellent. Stephen King does it again. Quite a story. The political comments made by others piqued my interest. King is right.

Liberal Crap. It’s not a story, it’s a liberal tirade.

Too preachy. King always writes interesting characters but this book was much to preachy about Covid and vaccinations.

Politics. Regardless of your political beliefs, this was a hard book to read. Way too many covid and political references. I don’t recommend.

Kingfan. Love Holly and all kings books w/ Holly and her gang as main characters.

Holly by Stephen King. Kept me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end! One of those reads I had to gobble up!

Pure Liberal Propaganda. Just when I thought Stephen King had kicked Trump out of his head it seems Trump is still living there rent free. Plus a whole lot of Big Pharm and Covid propaganda. Almost every page of this book has some extremely lefty nonsense. I love King’s books but I stopped reading after a few chapters. What a waste of money.

5 Stars!!!. I didn’t read this book but I saw all the trump supporters in the comments upset and giving 1 star. So anything that piss them off like that has got to be good! 😂

Those seeking to dictate what King can write about may be disappointed. Yes, Covid was a component in this book and it's very difficult not to talk about that along with the political factors involved with it. Also, for those purposely seeking out an author who is known as our era's greatest horror writer who has no bounds to his imagination, you shouldn't be surprised to find that he addresses the greatest horror of our time.

Waste of money. This book would not load to my Kindle device from Books app.

Fiction Not Politics. When I read, I always read fiction. Just like going to see a movie, I want to be taken away from the real world for a little while. The real world will still be waiting for me when I return. Unfortunately, this book wants to stuff the author’s political views down the readers throat from the very beginning. I stopped reading after a few chapters. That has never happened to me before. Especially when reading a King book. Sad. I wish I could get my money back. Papa Bear 1121
