En El profesor nos habla de los treinta años en los que fue docente en un instituto de secundaria en Nueva York.El relato empieza cuando McCourt tiene 27 años e, instalado en Nueva York, inicia una actividad académica para la cual sus estudios universitarios no han acabado de formarle. En efecto, las realidades sociales en un entorno tan duro como el neoyorquino resultan difíciles de digerir por parte de este inmigrante irlandés. Haciendo más caso a su intuición y a lo que le dicta su conciencia que a las directrices académicas, consigue despertar el interés de sus alumnos. Para ello, decide bajarse del pedestal en el que viven instalados la mayoría de profesores y se dedica a escuchar a sus alumnos y a aprender de ellos, poniéndose a su altura para conocer sus inquietudes, sus gustos y su forma de ver el mundo.
