Time, the continuous passage of existence in which events pass from a state of potentiality in the future, through the present, to a state of finality in the past, or so you thought! Of Contemptible Descent is a work of historical fiction, the story of one mans search for the truth. Danny Maloney is a man heading back to his home town. A town he spent his entire life trying to get away from. The repercussions back home following his Grandfathers desertion during World War II were unimaginable. Dannys Grandfather, Dennie, disappeared whilst on lookout duty as their group made its way across the French countryside. A passing German Division captured the remainder of his squad, Niner Company. The remaining men, all local boys, were marched into the town square and executed. Only one person survived the attack, Sergeant Thomas Cooper, now Mayor Cooper of Torpoint, California. The Maloney home became a cauldron of loathing and detest. Frequent attacks were common place. Dannys father was raised amidst an atmosphere of fear, bewilderment and shame. Dannys return rekindles a desire to find the truth. A desire he has forcibly suppressed for years. With the help of a close friend he travels to Normandy, determined to retrace the final steps of Niner Company across Northern France. Hoping to discover what actually happened on that fateful day in 1944. However, they havent travelled back to Europe alone. A cat and mouse race ensues with ransacked hotel rooms and high speed pursuits through the narrow streets of Argentan, the town where Niner Company were both captured and executed. The two men take refuge in an old church, St Martins. A church that was the last known whereabouts of Dannys Grandfather. Here they briefly discover tales of gold and betrayal before once again having to run. With their pursuers on their heels they flee into the sanctuary of an extraordinary octagonal bell tower. A bell tower with no bells. Dannys friend Floyd hides in a space created by the French Rsistance behind a wooden panel in the tower wall. In his efforts to secure the panel Danny unwittingly activates an ancient time portal thrusting him back into wartime France 1944. In Dannys eagerness to evade the occupying Germans he is soon captured by the French Rsistance. Both parties agree to work together. Danny offers intelligence about the German occupying forces in return for help in finding his friend. Danny very quickly has to come to terms with being thrust back into an alien world of cloak and dagger operations. How will he cope participating in a storyline that has already been played out once before? When the Rsistance act on information that Danny supplied, the balance of power within Argentan slowly begins to shift. Can he really alter history? What will be the repercussions of his actions? Danny has to think long and hard about everything he does. How each action will intertwine with the history that he knows, or a history that is yet to be. Will Danny find his Grandfather?
