Calling Me Home by Julie Kibler Book Summary

A National Best Seller!

Calling Me Home by Julie Kibler is a soaring debut interweaving the story of a heartbreaking, forbidden love in 1930s Kentucky with an unlikely modern-day friendship

Eighty-nine-year-old Isabelle McAllister has a favor to ask her hairdresser Dorrie Curtis. It's a big one. Isabelle wants Dorrie, a black single mom in her thirties, to drop everything to drive her from her home in Arlington, Texas, to a funeral in Cincinnati. With no clear explanation why. Tomorrow.

Dorrie, fleeing problems of her own and curious whether she can unlock the secrets of Isabelle's guarded past, scarcely hesitates before agreeing, not knowing it will be a journey that changes both their lives.

Over the years, Dorrie and Isabelle have developed more than just a business relationship. They are friends. But Dorrie, fretting over the new man in her life and her teenage son's irresponsible choices, still wonders why Isabelle chose her.

Isabelle confesses that, as a willful teen in 1930s Kentucky, she fell deeply in love with Robert Prewitt, a would-be doctor and the black son of her family's housekeeper—in a town where blacks weren't allowed after dark. The tale of their forbidden relationship and its tragic consequences makes it clear Dorrie and Isabelle are headed for a gathering of the utmost importance and that the history of Isabelle's first and greatest love just might help Dorrie find her own way.

One of the best. Buy it and read! You will so enjoy.

Amazing. I can't remember the last time a book made me cry. I highly recommend this book!

Amazing, Heartbreaking. Julie Kibler's debut novel is one of the best books I have ever read. It was an emotional roller coaster complete with well drawn characters, and it captured the racism and ignorance of the time with great detail. I found myself wanting to jump through the pages and strangle Isabelle's father for being such a wimp but then regaining my fondness for him once I learned the truth. I also enjoyed the many twists and turns of the plot, especially the reunion between Isa & Robert after I thought all was lost! I plan to follow Kibler's rise as a writer very closely as well as the film adaptation of Calling Me Home which I hope will do the novel justice.

Wonderful story!!. I loved this book. The characters are rich and the story is heart wrenching and heart warming all at the same time while not being the least bit predictable. Beautifully written!

Beautiful story of love, loss, and racism. This is the best thing since the help! Romance, horror, violence, an amazing plot, and deep characters. I loved it and it even made me cry by the end. Riveting story of the power of love and how it cans defy all boundaries. My rating: PG-13/ for thematic and disturbing images, graphic violence including torture, and sexuality

Calling Me Home. I fell in love with this book. The author's portray of Miss Isabelle was magnificent. I clung to every page.

Calling Me Home. Great book with surprising ending! Page turner for sure!!!

Wonderful Book. My girlfriend read this book with her book club. She told me it was a page turner and I must read it. She was right. I so enjoyed this book. It brought tears to my eyes. The story was not predictable like so many books are. I hope the new author is busy working on her second novel. Hopefully this book will make it to the shelves of stores like Target and the like so others can see the book and buy it.

A feel good book that makes you cry like a baby!. As someone who takes great pleasure in hearing stories from the past this book takes the cake. A wonderful story full of hope!

Calling Me Home. Touching novel. Well written. Throughout the read I was reminded of ‘Monica Wood’s ‘The One in a Million Boy’, another touching novel.

Great Storytelling!. It wrapped me in and I shed tears right along with the characters! I enjoyed it vey much!

Wonderfully written first novel. It's hard to believe this is a first novel! Wonderfully written beautiful story about relationships, friendship and forgiveness. Moving and sweet and thoughtful. I highly recommend this book!

Wonderful. This book told a wonderful story. I just loved it. Would love to see this as a movie, the way I seen it in my head while reading.

Great but sad read. This was a sad book but excellent. Recommend it to anyone.

Calling Me Home by Julie Kibler. This is one of the most wonderful books I have read. By the time I finished it, which only took 2 days as I could not put it down, I was sobbing and smiling at the same time.

Calling Me Home. I literally went back and forth in time while listening to this novel. I genuinely felt every happy moment and painful moment along with the character. Definitely worth the read!

Calling me home. I thoroughly enjoyed this story that is filled with love, humor, and life. There are many cruelties in life and plenty of injustice. This story faced them but the characters moved beyond them just as we are called to do in our life. I will look for the next work from this author with eager anticipation.

Calling me home. CALLING ME HOME... It's been many years since I have read a book that had me so engaged in the characters that I did not want to partake in the daily adventures of my own life. The authors clever wit made me giggle, while her sensitivity to deep emotional issues made me weep. The best I can describe Julie Kiblier's debut novel is a love story that will pull on your heart strings like The Notebook while make you question racial boundaries and prejudices like The Help. Like Dottie, I am a better person having known Miss Isabelle.

Calling me home. Awesome story-- cried for the couple hundred pages. Great portrayal of Americas ugly racism -- but the power of the human spirit.Thank you for such an excellent read.

Calling Me Home. I absolutely loved this book! I just couldn't wait to keep reading, avoiding the things that needed to be done just to get a few more pages read. I live in South Texas where racists definitely still exist, this book just brought it home to me how much we are all the same. The book was so well written, I fell in love with the characters and will miss them all now that it is finished. I would recommend this book to anyone, perhaps it will open the heart of a few. Thank you for a wonderful week of reading and living with your imagination, Julie Kibler. WRITE SOME MORE!

Great read. I loved this book so much. I was not expecting the twists at the end!

Virginia Ganly. Thoroughly enjoyed every written word of this book, never a boring moment. Sensitive and completely believable, I highly recommend this great story of trials and deep love and the prejudices that ruled during the turn of the century.

Calling me home. This book by Julie killer is one of the Best Books I have ever read, it will stay with me always

That story you wish could keep on going.... Calling Me Home is an amazing story that explores an interracial relationship during the 1940s. Both Miss Isabelle and Dorrie have great stories but it's Miss Isabelle's flashbacks that make the book. The love she experienced, the rules she was willing to break for it, and then followed by the several heartbreaks she had to endure not of her own fault. I recommend this book to everyone, even those not partial to romance. The story is gut-wretchingly beautiful you won't regret picking it up.
