Comunque Fanshawe se lo accolla e intraprende la scalata di una collina. Giunto in cima, punta il binocolo e vede un campanile, una radura con una forca in mezzo, e varie altre cose, che però Richards dichiara inesistenti. Ma il giovane insiste e il giorno dopo decide di andare in bicicletta in quei luoghi che ha visto solo da lontano, per verificare...
