A Cidade e As Serras é o ultimo romance de Eça de Queirós, publicado em 1901, um ano após sua morte. Retirado do conto "Civilização", tem sido considerado, junto com as obras "A Ilustre Casa de Ramires" e "Correspondência de Fradique Mendes", uma trilogia, cujo ponto comum é a crítica ao ambiente social e urbano de Portugal.
Como o próprio nome da obra revela (a cidade se opõe ao campo), pretende criticar o progresso técnico, urgente e rápido, na virada do século 19 para o 20. Eça de Queirós julgava, ao fim da vida, que o homem só era feliz longe da civilização. Por isso, a temática mais forte da obra é contra a ociosidade dos que têm dinheiro na cidade, e sua vida burguesa, ou seja, o acúmulo irrefletido de dinheiro.
A obra faz parte da lista de leitura dos vestibulares de UNICAMP e FUVEST.
