Jony Ive by Leander Kahney Book Summary

“An adulating biography of Apple’s left-brained wunderkind, whose work continues to revolutionize modern technology.” —Kirkus Reviews

In 1997, Steve Jobs discovered a scruffy British designer toiling away at Apple’s headquarters, surrounded by hundreds of sketches and prototypes. Jony Ive’s collaboration with Jobs would produce some of the world’s most iconic technology products, including the iMac, iPod, iPad, and iPhone. Ive’s work helped reverse Apple’s long decline, overturned entire industries, and created a huge global fan base. Yet little is known about the shy, soft-spoken whiz whom Jobs referred to as his “spiritual partner.”

Leander Kahney offers a detailed portrait of the English art school student with dyslexia who became the most acclaimed tech designer of his generation. Drawing on interviews with Ive’s former colleagues and Apple insiders, Kahney “takes us inside the creation of these memorable objects.” (The Wall Street Journal)

Great. This book is purely amazing.

Jony Ive. cool

GREAT!. I really love this book.

Finally. Love Apple, love design, and loved the book on Steve Jobs. This was the only thing missing for me and thanks to Leander Kahney, I’ve finally gotten to completeion. Amazing read, probably the best on Jony Ive out there right now. Love the cult cast as well!

Good read. Some good insights and never before printed info. Well written. A little if the math doesn't add up. Years and ages. But a fun read with tons of info for the apple lover.

Great Read. This is a great read when looking into another point of view into apple, and to see great insight into jony. I would like to see what would come of a tim cook book by Leander

So excited. I love Jony Ive i am a huge fan and i can’t wait to learn everything about him

Awesome peek behind the curtain. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and found it hard to put down once I started. I am an engineer by profession and have been guilty of letting myself get buried in the technical details about making something work. This book really gave me a better appreciated for the broader concept of design and ID. The passion that has made Apple products so in incredible is tangibly captured in this book.

Great Book. I've only read the sample so far, but I will be purchasing this book

It was alright BUT. I read this book expecting to learn a lot about Ives. Although you do learn some aspects of his life I feel like you learn more about apple and their history.

Good Book. I enjoyed this book. It is well-written and I learned a lot about Jony Ive. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in Apple.

Attention to Detail. Great artists in any field can tell you that attention to detail is a prerequisite. In Leander Kahney’s excellent book, he chronicles the life story of Jony Ive, his rise through the ID ranks and journey to Apple, and his obsession with getting things right.

An Excellent Book. Great insight and understanding of behind the scenes info on Jony Ive and Apple.

Great Book!. Finally Jony Ive gets the attention he desereves!

Great Book!. An awesome read if your an Apple fan or just anyone in general that is intrigued by the person behind all the ingenious designs!

Beautiful portryal ofo a genius. It was amazing to read about one of the greatest design minds of the last decade!!

Amazing. This was an incredible book!

Nice book. Nice book

Great book. So far is great although I would've loved more photographs.

Best Bio I've read in a long time.. I am big on bios especially on anybody revolving around technology. I was super stoked when this was released. I read it in a day just couldn't put it down.

Great book. Learned a lot about Apple and Jony Ive that you never hear about when reading the tech press.

Interesting. Very nice book. Tells a lot of interesting details!

Review and Praise. I've been a Cult of Mac fan for quite some time and when I heard Leander announce this book on the Cultcast I couldn't wait! The level of detail with how the Apple design team and Jony Ive work is exactly how meticulous this book is in chronicling this amazing man's life! Leander has done a great job with this book! Absolutely Loved it!

A unique insight. I really enjoyed the book. It was a great insight in to a world shrouded in mystery for Apple fans. Most striking was a look at Jony's leadership style and how team oriented these product's designs are. So much media about Apple makes it sounds like a faction-based, secretive, internal warfare. And while that may hold some truth, there is also, within those teams, and deep sense of unity and collaboration. This book did a great job of portraying both while leaving the reader to make their own assessment of that model's value. Bottom line- very insightful, very motivating, and very engaging. I read it in less than a week on an iPad I now have an even deeper appreciation for ;)

This book has been excellent!. This book gives you excellent insight into the life of one of the most influential designers of a modern era. I highly recommend.

Ive been waiting. I have been waiting for this book for awhile. I've always been interested in what it took to design the worlds best tech. I loved it :) 5 stars; it's a must read.

A Great Read. As a designer myself not only did this book provide some leisurely reading time. It also provided me with some great insight and ideas that I could share with my fellow colleagues. My only complaint is that it wasn’t long enough.

Great Book. Great book, I have always wanted to know as much about Jony Ive as possible. Hopefully there will be a second book with even more info.

Great. Awesome book!

Great Book. Great book, I loved it. It only got 4 stars because of the price.

Well... Jony is a special man but i wouldnt say he is the Genious behind Apple's Greatest Products in all the sections just in the design part but the book is great :D good work

Must read for an Apple fan. I found it to be extremely interesting and informative. It was an enjoyable read and a must for any fan of Apple. Great job.

Revolutionary thinker - Jony Ive. A well written book and truly an inspiring story.

Great Read. Even tho we all know about the secrecy at apple This book still manages to give a very insightful and interesting glimpse inside and respectfully sheds light on the brilliance that is Jony Ive. Highly recommend!

Great read. Great read. The author uncovers more details about this behind-the-scenes, highly acclaimed designer than anyone else ever has. Definitely worth the read.

Inspiring Book about a Brilliant Mind behind a Gold Star Team. This book really opens the struggles IDg team to through with every new product and every new iteration. Standing tall on its own IDg team really exemplifies Quality. The book is well written. Kudos to Leander Kahney.

Excellent Insight. I’ve always been interested in the minds behind the Apple designs. This gives great insight into Jony Ive and the design team that has created some of the most innovative yet simple to use products. Highly recommend!

A great one. I still haven’t finished the book quite yet .. but I really enjoy it so far.

What a wonderful world we make.. Beautiful look into the brilliant mind of Jony. Facts and fun. You'll find yourself saying "Wow!" And not even know it!

The book. Absolutely fantastic read, brilliantly written and engaging, perfect for someone looking to find out more on jony, his amazing designs, colleagues and family

Love this book!. Love Jonny Ive! This book is fantastic!

Great Read. This is a fantastic book. Not just a great read about an incredible designer. But a great read about one of the greatest companys on earth. Thanks for the hard work. I really enjoyed it.

Brilliant. This book is a wonderful insight to the world of the most influential person at Apple today. There was. Also a new view into the designs at Apple. The book reads well, and very informative. It bounces around in time a little bit, but in hindsight it makes sense. I loved it.

Such an excellent read. This book is wonderful. Being able to see just how Jony Ive got to where he was and all of the history was amazing. It was extremely well-written. Definitely a recommended read for any Apple user or design lover. Well done!

One of a kind. Kahney does it again. Never before heard insights into the genius that is Jony Ive

One of the best books I’ve ever read!. This is an amazing book that really does a great job showcasing how vital Jony Ive is to Apple. This is a must-read for any Apple fan like myself!

Design. If you are an apple fan or simply someone who loves the attention to detail and design of apple, you will love this book! Kahney does a fantastic job exploring more about Jony Ive and his designs.

Hello Guvna. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Well written and an easy read. A great supplement to Walter Isaacson’s biography of Steve Jobs. Enjoyed the photos too. Now we need Mr. Kahney to write a book on Tim Cook. "Come on y’all."

Fantastic book!. A great, easy read! Really quite fascinating how Jony grew up and how that impacted who he is today.

Did it again. Leander's latest release is a must-read for any follower of the Cult of Mac. The depth of research is evident as this comprehensive story of Jony Ive is complete and entertaining. This title will be a welcome addition to any iBooks collection.

Catnip for Apple fans. This is a terrific read packed with inside baseball on all things Apple. I could almost imagine myself running the cappuccino maker during a brainstorming session at the Design Studio.

Ok wow.. Apple is a gem. And to create it took a lot of manpower. There were many people involved in its success. Steve and Jony were undoubtedly one of the most significant influences, in my opinion. So it is great to read about the other genius behind Apple's products. Since this book conveys the message so well, it definitely gives readers the other facet of Apple's success. Please do grab a copy, or whatever. Just make sure you end up reading it.

Great book!!!. A great book that shows how much the people at apple care.

Great!. I listen to Leander on the cultcast, read his articles on the cult of mac, and this book was truley great, my father purchased it for me and i read it in almost 4 days! Gread read

His geometry of thought is unique and inspiring.. "The atmosphere became “charged with ideas” once Jony was in charge." We all heard this saying "Be the change you want to see in the world", right? Look at what Jony Ive and his team did to the world through their work - they upgraded people's expectations of aesthetics, design and usability. They didn't go about lecturing and preaching why things should be a certain way. Many companies in the world are looking up to them for leadership in design. I don't know of any other company that designs products that are so clean and posses immaculate cohesion across all elements when you experience them. Complete and unified. After having experienced Apple, you will see start to notice disharmony and clutter when you interact with other software, and because Apple upgraded your thoughts and expectations for better aesthetics through your interaction with their technology. This books is very inspiring and upgrading. You will see why Apple is successful, what they have been through and how they evolved into who they are now. I included my most favourite gems from the book below. Every page is a journey. Get it, it's awesome. ~~~~~ "When you move on, you leave some things behind. The floppy drive, which I will argue until I’m blue in the face, is really antiquated technology. I’ve heard the complaints, but if there’s not some sort of friction in a move forward, your step is not as consequential as you’d like to believe it is." "Jobs had made the sudden independence of design possible at Apple. “In most people’s vocabularies, design means veneer,” Jobs told Fortune shortly after retaking the reins at Apple. “But to me, nothing could be further from the meaning of design. Design is the fundamental soul of a man-made creation.” "They [ideas] came from brainstorming sessions, not from focus groups or market surveys. “We don’t do focus groups—that is the job of the designer,” said Jony. “It’s unfair to ask people who don’t have a sense of the opportunities of tomorrow from the context of today to design.” "If you just sit there for ten minutes and move the display around, you quickly forget about its design. The design gets out of the way,” Jony concluded. “We are not interested in design statements. We do everything we can to simplify design". (Jony talking about his design team) "I do not want any of my guys thinking about cost. They should not even care about the cost because that is not their job." "IDg became the most visible and prestigious corporate design group in the world, won more design awards than the rest of the computer industry combined and reached a level where further improvement meant using its own work as a yardstick rather than the competition’s.” "Jony said. “We design the user’s perceptions of what those objects are, as well as the meaning that accrues from their physical existence, their function and the sense of possibility they offer.” They discussed topics like “objects that dispense positive emotions.” "But Jony offered a key insight: “It’s also very inhuman and very cold. Because of the industry’s obsession with absolutes, there has been a tendency to ignore product attributes that are difficult to measure or talk about. In that sense, the industry has missed out on the more emotive, less tangible product attributes. But to me, that is why I bought an Apple computer in the first place. That is why I came to work for Apple. It’s because I’ve always sensed that Apple had a desire to do more than the bare minimum. It wasn’t just going to do what was functionally and empirically necessary. In the early stuff, I got a sense that care was taken even on details, hard and soft, that people may never discover.” "It was the first time he felt the humanity of a product. “It was such a dramatic moment and I remember it so clearly,” he said. “There was a real sense of the people who made it.” “It was a company that certainly wasn’t innovating,” Jony said at the time. “We lost our identity and looked to competition for leadership.” "Apple’s products looked like they came from four different companies, not one. It drove Jobs crazy." "There were layers and layers of middle managers, many who had come from Dell or HP and didn’t understand the design-driven approach." "I remember very clearly Steve announcing that our goal is not just to make money but to make great products,” Jony later recalled. “The decisions you make based on that philosophy are fundamentally different from the ones we had been making at Apple." "Another factor was undoubtedly that Jony was frustrated with consulting. He had achieved what many designers dream of: a successful practice with a lot of freedom. But consulting also restricted his ability to truly make an effect. “Working outside a company made it difficult to have a profound impact on product plans and to truly innovate.” "To most people a lid is a just lid, but Jony gave it special attention. “It’s the first thing you see and the first thing you interact with,” Jony said. “Before you can turn the product on, you must first open the lid. I wanted that moment to be special.” "To enhance that moment, Jony designed a clever, spring-loaded latch mechanism; when you pressed the lid, it popped open." (talking about iMac) "Marketing experts advised that an un-expandable desktop would be commercial suicide." “Even though Steve didn’t draw any of the lines, his ideas and inspiration made the design what it is” "Apple had lost ground in the market because they were trying to be everything to everybody instead of focusing on the real needs of their customers.” "When we are at these early stages in design . . . often we’ll talk about the story for the product—we’re talking about perception. We’re talking about how you feel about the product, not in a physical sense, but in a perceptual sense.

Awesome. Leander did a really good job. Jony Ive was a great read! I recommend it to anybody who is an Apple fan
