Gargantua by Francois Rabelais Book Summary

Le second roman de Rabelais, toujours publié sous le nom d'Alcofribas Nasier, pose des problèmes de datation, la critique actuelle hésitant entre 1533-1534 et 1535. En raison de la répression royale de 1534, cette question importe pour évaluer la hardiesse du propos. Gargantua, longtemps jugé mieux construit que Pantagruel, s'en démarque moins par une supériorité stylistique que par son didactisme plus prononcé. Dans le célèbre prologue, le narrateur avertit ses lecteurs de ne point s'arrêter au sens littéral mais d'interpréter le texte au-delà de son apparence frivole, et de chercher la « substantifique moelle » de ses écrits. L'auteur multiplie en effet les allusions aux événements ou interrogations de son époque. Le récit commence par annoncer la généalogie du héros mais ne donne à lire qu'un poème illisible, Les Fanfreluches antidotées.
