La ciudad de Dios by San Agustín Book Summary
San Agustín es una de las personalidades más fascinantes y complejas de la historia del cristianismo. Una de sus más importantes obras es, sin duda, La ciudad de Dios (de civitate Dei), redactada en los años de la toma de Roma en manos de los visigodos. En ella se establece por vez primera la idea del paralelo entre Estado divino y Estado terrenal, de gran influencia histórica en la política y las leyes de la historia occidental.
Este volumen, en una completísima edición a cargo de R. Mª Marina Sáez, incluye los libros I-VII, precedidos de un exhaustivo estudio introductorio revisado y actualizado. En su parte inicial, san Agustín refuta las acusaciones de que Roma hubiera caído por el efecto pernicioso del cristianismo, al tiempo que censura el paganismo y el culto a muchos dioses. El autor recurre a multitud de ejemplos de la historia de Roma, que demuestra conocer muy bien. La segunda parte del libro está dedicada a su tema principal, la divina providencia, y su presencia en la historia de la humanidad. En ella se contraponen la ciudad espiritual, creada por Dios y construida por los que creen en Él, y la ciudad terrenal, fundada por el egoísmo mundano y la injusticia.
