La vita e l'opera di uno dei massimi filosofi di ogni tempo, al centro di un'epoca in vertiginosa trasformazione e in procinto di divenire il nostro mondo. Per Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, la filosofia è il proprio tempo appreso in concetti. Un progetto che proprio al cospetto dello spaesamento e delle polarizzazioni contemporanee non può non suscitare ammirazione.
Nessun altro pensatore ebbe modo di conoscere altrettanto bene il passaggio dalla vecchia Europa alla società moderna. Che si tratti dell'Illuminismo, della Rivoluzione francese, del dominio napoleonico, delle guerre di liberazione, dell'industrializzazione o delle grandi scoperte, il mondo durante i decenni di vita di Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel cambiò radicalmente e irreversibilmente. E lo fece attraverso idee che sfociarono in rivoluzioni politiche, industriali, estetiche ed educative. Non a caso, secondo Hegel la filosofia doveva elaborare il concetto del proprio tempo: non verità eterne, dunque, non il fondamento di tutto l'essere, ma il proprio tempo in concetti. Jürgen Kaube racconta la vita di Hegel, ne spiega l'opera e mostra come tutti gli sconvolgimenti epocali convergessero verso un tentativo di rivoluzione finale: quella del pensiero. Hegel lavorò a Jena, il centro intellettuale del Classicismo, trovando ispirazione in Schiller, Goethe e in molte altre eminenti personalità del suo tempo. Grande polemista, amava discutere, per esempio con i Romantici; trovava interessante e assorbiva tutto ciò che era nuovo. Kaube presta particolare attenzione anche alla vita privata del filosofo: al figlio illegittimo, morto di malaria in Indonesia, o alla sorella, che partecipò alla congiura repubblicana nel Württemberg...
