Love, Theoretically by Ali Hazelwood Book Summary

"The reigning queen of STEM romance."—The Washington Post

An Indie Next and Library Reads Pick!

Rival physicists collide in a vortex of academic feuds and fake dating shenanigans in this delightfully STEMinist romcom from the New York Times bestselling author of The Love Hypothesis and Love on the Brain.

The many lives of theoretical physicist Elsie Hannaway have finally caught up with her. By day, she’s an adjunct professor, toiling away at grading labs and teaching thermodynamics in the hopes of landing tenure. By other day, Elsie makes up for her non-existent paycheck by offering her services as a fake girlfriend, tapping into her expertly honed people-pleasing skills to embody whichever version of herself the client needs.

Honestly, it’s a pretty sweet gig—until her carefully constructed Elsie-verse comes crashing down. Because Jack Smith, the annoyingly attractive and arrogant older brother of her favorite client, turns out to be the cold-hearted experimental physicist who ruined her mentor’s career and undermined the reputation of theorists everywhere. And he’s the same Jack Smith who rules over the physics department at MIT, standing right between Elsie and her dream job.

Elsie is prepared for an all-out war of scholarly sabotage but…those long, penetrating looks? Not having to be anything other than her true self when she’s with him? Will falling into an experimentalist’s orbit finally tempt her to put her most guarded theories on love into practice?

Fantastic!. I don’t know the best words to say other than phenomenal. This book had me laughing like a mad woman. It felt real in a way. Like I could see parts of myself in Elsie. The flow of the writing keeps you tied in. I never wanted to put it down. I’ve read other books from this author and I’ve honestly loved them. But this one.. she definitely outside her self!

Disappointed. Hazelwood relies, yet again, on miscommunication and misinterpreted feelings. As a scientist, I was offended by the female protagonist’s people-pleasing behavior and ineptitude regarding her career. I did, however, appreciate the author’s knowledge of politics in academia, financial struggles, and emotional insights.

Each book just gets better!. While I loved The Love Hypothesis and Love on the Brain, I think Love, Theoretically is my favorite! Coming from a grad student with aspirations in academia, along with my fair share of similar negative experiences in my field, I just felt like this book did super well portraying the power relations that advisors/ mentors have over their students. A good reminder that tenured professors are not always the most perfect people. Besides that, I really loved the slower development of Elsie’s feelings for Jack and their relationship! Such a great book, looking forward to more.

Hazelwood does it again. This book was so well written. It was funny, sexy, and just had so much love.

LOVED it.. My favorite Ali Hazelwood yet. I loved all of the characters so much. Great storyline. GREAT STEM female and queer representation.

SLAYED AND CLEARED. AMAZING DEFINITELY ATE

Loooooved. As a diabetic myself I fell in love with Elsie so quickly finding out we shared a similar struggle. I see myself in a lot of Elsie and that’s strong reason for my new love if you’d book and the characters.🩷🩷

Good Timeline and Slower Pace. The romantic build up was a much slower pace and the NSFW scenes didn’t take up much of the book but tbh I liked that! It was a gradual build and the story was nice and I really enjoyed the tiny plot twist that was included! Adam & Olive are introduced in the book which was nice to hear what happened between the two of them later. I hope the new release also brings up past characters from Love on the Brain.

READ IT. JUST READ IT.. I loved this book. I love all of Ali Hazelwood’s fictional work and have legitimately considered reading her academic work as well. I love the way she writes, and I love the way her characters start out just a little messed up but find their way in the end. It was honestly fun to read Jack and Elsie’s story. While there were definitely moments when I was shouting at the characters to “just say what you mean!!” I also understand the anxiety and reluctance to be completely honest to yourself and others. And again, all of the characters learn how to communicate by the end and there is nothing I love more than some healthy character growth. And the cameos! Having a glimpse of Adam and Olive after the end of The Love Hypothesis was like catching up with an old friend. It made me so happy! If you’re looking for a good romance and a good story, this is it. This is the one.

AHHH!. Beautiful. That’s the way I describe this book. Maybe the only way to describe this book. This will take you on an emotional roller coaster ride, as you feel the emotions- anger, happiness, sadness, and confusion- when you have to do a quick look up on physic words you have never heard In your life. But all together, as the story unfolds it all makes sense, and the ending is just so satisfying, definitely 10/10! With this being said, I am such a fan, and can’t WAIT to read more of this authors work.

10/10. I found my love of reading through a love hypothesis, so obviously I had high hopes for this book and it did NOT DISAPPOINT!!! I loved every second of it. It was perfect!!!

AS ALWAYS SLAY. The chemistry between the two of the main characters is just present 💜

10 Outta 10 Recommend. Absolutely love, love, love this book! I preordered it last minute and spent the entire night reading it. It is 3 AM and I’m laying in bed completely blown away by Elsie and Jack’s chemistry. I have never felt so connected with a character before (knowing Elsie is a die-hard Twilight fan definitely helps). Seeing her growth on a personal and career level was beautiful to witness. Can’t recommend this book enough. Thank you for making academia sexy.

Love. Ali has done it again, real life characters with safe consensual adult content and adorable hearts topping romance

Incredible. I loved every moment of this book! It filled my heart in all my favourite ways. Elsie’s low self-esteem is beautifully written in a way the reader can deeply understand. The relationship between Jack and Elsie is realistic and beautiful. I honestly wish I could read it over again for the first time.
