Gangs de Nueva York by Herbert Asbury Book Summary
El libro escrito en el año 1927, nos da un enfoque acerca de los primeros indicios de la violencia organizada en la ciudad de Nueva York. La historia nos transporta al año 1863, donde feroces bandas callejeras se disputaban el poder del territorio. Las reyertas estaban originadas principalmente por los llamados nativos, hombres y mujeres nacidos en los Estados Unidos y los inmigrantes irlandeses. Ambos bandos eran los más peligrosos y querían conseguir lo mismo: El poder total de los cinco puntos de la ciudad. Los personajes que nos describe el autor son seres decadentes, vagos, llenos de miseria, criado en la corrupción, sin ningún valor moral de por medio, por lo que el ambiente se hace más precario y violento.
Gangs de Nueva York es una obra original y muy peculiar en su enfoque: una historia de los orígenes y los primeros años del crimen organizado en una ciudad como Nueva York, y eso lo convirtió muy pronto en un libro de culto, de gran utilidad para conocer aspectos poco divulgados de la hisotria de la ciudad y repleto de datos curiosos. Esta obra inspiró a Martin Scorsese que a partir de los datos y vidas de los diferentes gangster creó el guión de una película de más de 4 horas de las que la productora recortó algo más de una.
